Android: Turn Group Message Replies into Individual Messages

The Benefits of Individual vs. Group Messaging
There are instances where communicating with a collection of individuals via a single message is more efficient than sending separate texts. When coordinating a group and facilitating a discussion, a unified message stream proves advantageous.
Typically, group messaging functions by converting a standard SMS into an MMS, which is then distributed to all recipients. A reply from any member of the group is then broadcast to the entire list. This approach is often practical and streamlined.
Controlling Replies in Mass Texting
However, a scenario arises when you need to disseminate the same information to numerous contacts, but desire to receive responses privately. Consider, for example, organizing a child’s birthday party and needing RSVPs; these confirmations should be directed solely to you, not shared with the entire invitee list.
Traditionally, achieving this would necessitate sending multiple individual texts. Fortunately, a simple adjustment within the Google Messenger application for Android allows you to send a message to multiple people while receiving replies as individual texts. This effectively mirrors the "Reply All" functionality in email, but for SMS communication.
Adjusting Google Messenger Settings
To implement this feature, begin by accessing the settings menu within Messenger. This is done by tapping the three-button overflow menu located on the app’s primary screen, then selecting "Settings."
Scroll to the bottom of the settings menu and select the "Advanced" option.
Configuring Group Messaging Options
Within the Advanced settings, locate the "Group Messaging" option and tap it. This will reveal a pop-up menu presenting two choices: "Send individual SMS messages to all recipients" and "Send a single MMS to all recipients."
Select "Send individual SMS messages to all recipients" to activate the desired functionality. This ensures that each reply is received as a separate SMS message, rather than being broadcast to the group.
Important Considerations
It’s important to note that this setting is a global preference. Once changed, it will apply to all subsequent group messages sent through Google Messenger.
To revert to the standard group messaging method, where replies are shared with all participants, you will need to re-enter the settings and select the "Send a single MMS to all recipients" option.
This provides a convenient way to manage communication and ensure privacy when sending the same message to multiple contacts.
