OS X Pop-up Calendar: Get a Windows-Like Experience

Enhancing OS X with a Convenient Pop-Up Calendar

While Apple’s OS X is a highly regarded operating system, certain functionalities are absent or surprisingly less developed compared to Windows. One such instance is the swift access to a pop-up calendar by simply clicking the date and time displayed in the system tray.

This feature offers a more streamlined experience than the necessity of opening a full-sized calendar application and then requiring an additional click to close it. The ability to quickly verify dates – such as determining what day next Tuesday falls on or identifying the date of March 4 – and then promptly return to ongoing tasks is a significant convenience.

OS X does not natively include this capability; however, a freely available add-on can be integrated with iCal to provide a compact and easily accessible calendar for quick reference.

Introducing Itsycal: A Lightweight Solution

Itsycal is a program that isn’t newly released, nor is it the sole menu bar calendar option available. Its key strengths lie in its minimal resource usage, unobtrusive design, and, crucially, its free availability.

Like any effective calendar add-on, Itsycal integrates seamlessly with iCal, granting access to both date information and your scheduled events.

The application is distributed as a .zip archive. Within, you’ll find an executable file that requires initial execution by double-clicking and confirming the "Open" prompt. For organizational purposes, it’s recommended to move the Itsycal package to your Applications folder for permanent storage.

Configuring and Utilizing Itsycal

Upon launching Itsycal, an icon will appear in your menu bar. This icon can be repositioned by holding the "Command" key while click-dragging it to your desired location, such as alongside the clock.

Clicking the Itsycal icon allows you to navigate through months using the arrow buttons located in the upper-right corner. The central dot will instantly return the display to the current month.

The pushpin icon toggles the pinning function. Without pinning, the calendar will fade from view when clicking elsewhere. Pinning requires a click on the Itsycal icon to dismiss the calendar, which is beneficial when referencing the calendar while working in other applications.

The calendar icon, situated next to the three lines, will directly open iCal for event management and updates.

Customizing Itsycal’s Settings

Access the settings menu by clicking the three lines in the lower-right corner of the calendar.

Because Itsycal integrates with iCal, you can select which calendar events to display. Each dot beneath the date numbers signifies events from your connected calendars, including Facebook, Google, and others.

You can also configure the number of upcoming events displayed when clicking the menu bar icon, ranging from one to seven days.

An additional option allows you to show or hide the week number, resulting in a slightly more streamlined calendar view.

Keyboard Shortcuts and Automatic Startup

A keyboard shortcut can be assigned to quickly show and hide Itsycal, eliminating the need to click the icon. Itsycal offers other keyboard shortcuts as well, enabling complete control without lifting your fingers from the keyboard.

To have Itsycal launch automatically upon login, check the appropriate box within the settings. This adds an entry to your profile’s login items, accessible in System Preferences under "Users & Groups."

The settings panel also includes a button to quit Itsycal when desired.

Conclusion

While we appreciate software add-ons that expand existing functionality, a pop-up calendar feels like a long-overdue addition to OS X. Fortunately, tools like Itsycal fill this gap effectively. Itsycal remains unobtrusive unless actively used, and its small size – approximately 1.2MB – is negligible. Best of all, it’s completely free!
