Show All Drives in File Explorer - Windows Guide

Displaying Hidden Drives in Windows File Explorer
Typically, Windows conceals empty drives within the File Explorer interface. This practice aims to declutter the view. However, it is possible to configure Windows to display all drives consistently.
The term "empty drives" generally refers to drives utilizing removable media. These include card readers that remain connected to your computer, even when no media is inserted. Windows assigns a permanent drive letter to these devices.
How to Enable Visibility of All Drives
To begin, launch File Explorer. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Change folder and search options." In older Windows versions—prior to Windows 8—this option is labeled "File and folder options."
The "Folder Options" window will appear. Proceed to the "View" tab.
Within the "Advanced settings" section, locate and disable the "Hide empty drives" option. Confirm your selection by clicking "OK."
Following this adjustment, all drives—whether containing media or not—will be visible within your File Explorer window. This provides a consistent view of all available storage options.
This modification is particularly useful for users who frequently utilize removable media and wish to avoid the intermittent appearance and disappearance of drive letters. Having all drives displayed at all times can streamline workflow and reduce potential confusion.
Note: This setting affects how drives are displayed in all File Explorer windows.
