The Amazon Echo excels at providing current information like weather forecasts, traffic conditions, and sports scores. However, maximizing its utility requires some initial configuration of the device settings.
Personalizing Weather, Traffic, and Sports Updates
Our previous guide detailed the initial setup of your Echo and the Alexa voice assistant. While that tutorial showcased numerous Alexa capabilities, it didn't fully explore the customization options available for local weather, traffic, and sports information.
Certain Alexa features function immediately upon setup, such as answering general knowledge questions or performing unit conversions. Conversely, the weather, traffic, and sports functionalities perform optimally when specifically tailored to your location, commute, and preferred teams.
To ensure accurate and relevant updates, actively refine these settings. This will allow your Echo to deliver the information you need, precisely when you need it.
Key areas for personalization include:
- Your current location for precise weather reports.
- Your typical commute route for real-time traffic updates.
- Your favorite sports teams to receive scores and news.
By investing a few moments in these adjustments, you can significantly enhance the value and convenience offered by your Amazon Echo.
Configuring Geographic Settings on Your Echo Device
Access to the required settings can be achieved through the Alexa application for both iOS and Android platforms, or by visiting echo.amazon.com while logged into your Amazon account.
For demonstration, we will configure an Echo for a hypothetical user residing in Beverly Hills, California, who commutes to the University of California, Los Angeles, and maintains a strong interest in sports teams from Minneapolis, Minnesota, their original hometown.
Launch the application or webpage and select "Settings" from the left-hand menu. From within the settings, navigating to the necessary sub-menus is straightforward.
Weather Information
Let's begin by adjusting the weather settings, as this process is less intuitive than configuring traffic or sports updates. Unlike the other options, a dedicated weather menu isn’t present; instead, it’s integrated within the general Echo settings.
To locate the weather settings, proceed to Settings > [Your Name]'s Echo. Within the second section of the general Echo settings, you will find "Device location". Initially, the zip code associated with the device was within the correct geographic area, but did not match the billing address or primary residence.
Click the "Edit" link and, as illustrated, enter your address. A complete street address is recommended, as this information may be utilized by future Echo features, though a zip code is sufficient for accurate weather reports.
After configuration, a simple voice command like "Alexa, weather update" or "Alexa, how's the weather?" will provide the current conditions and forecast for your specified location. Alexa will also display this information as a card within the Alexa app.
Traffic Reporting
The traffic report configuration is more direct, featuring a dedicated "Traffic" entry within the settings menu. Access this by navigating to Settings > Traffic.
The "From" section within the Traffic menu should automatically populate with the address listed in your Amazon account. If this address is incorrect or you wish to use a different starting point, click "Change address" to modify it.
Subsequently, click "Add address" in the "To" section to specify your destination. If your commute includes multiple stops, utilize the "Add stop" option to incorporate them into your route.
With this section configured, a voice command of "Alexa, traffic update" will elicit a verbal response detailing the fastest route and estimated commute time. This information will also be displayed as a card within the Alexa app, including alternative route options.
Sports News
Similar to traffic settings, sports updates have a dedicated menu accessible via Settings > Sports Update.
Within the Sports Update section, a search box is provided. You can enter the team name, city, or state associated with the team. For our user following multiple Minnesota teams, searching for "Minnesota" is the most efficient approach.
While focusing on teams from the same region, you can also select teams from different areas by performing multiple searches. Once your teams are selected, various voice commands can be used to receive sports updates.
A general request like "Alexa, sports updates" will provide information on recent games for the in-season teams you follow. Specific updates can be requested with commands such as "Alexa, how are the Vikings doing?", which will deliver details about their last game and upcoming schedule. As with weather and traffic, Alexa will display a corresponding card in the Alexa app after your query.
By carefully adjusting these settings, your Echo will be tailored to your location, commute, and favorite sports teams, ensuring Alexa is always prepared to provide relevant information.
