Enable or Disable iOS App Automatic Updates - Guide

Managing Automatic Downloads on iOS Devices

iOS provides a feature allowing for automatic downloads of apps and other content, facilitating seamless updates. However, this convenience can lead to unexpected data usage. Users with limited data plans may find it beneficial to deactivate this functionality.

This guide details the process of both disabling and enabling automatic downloads on your iOS device. It also explains how to restrict updates to Wi-Fi connections only. The automatic downloads feature is particularly helpful for those who frequently overlook manual app updates, preventing a large backlog from accumulating.

Accessing Settings

Begin by locating and tapping the “Settings” icon on your device’s home screen.

Navigating to iTunes & App Store

Within the “Settings” menu, select “iTunes & App Store” from the options presented on the left-hand side.

Controlling Automatic Updates

On the right side of the screen, you’ll find a slider next to “Updates”. Tap this slider to toggle automatic updates on or off.

Important Note: You can also individually control automatic downloads for apps, music, and books by adjusting the corresponding slider buttons.

The slider will change to a white and gray appearance when the feature is deactivated.

Restricting Updates to Wi-Fi

If you prefer not to completely disable automatic downloads, you can configure your device to only utilize Wi-Fi for these updates. Simply tap the slider button labeled “Use Cellular Data”. This button will also turn white and gray when disabled.

Disabling Wi-Fi Assist

To further ensure cellular data isn’t used for updates, consider disabling the Wi-Fi Assist feature, introduced in iOS 9. Wi-Fi Assist automatically switches to cellular data when your Wi-Fi signal weakens, maintaining a consistent connection.

Android Considerations

It’s worth noting that automatic app updates can also be managed and disabled on Android devices.
