Discovering the Android Nougat Easter Egg: A Cat Collection Game

A delightful aspect of receiving a new Android update is uncovering the concealed Easter Egg integrated within the “About” menu. These hidden features have grown increasingly imaginative over time. The Nougat version presents a particularly unique and engaging experience: the ability to collect virtual cats.

With Nougat, a novel, secret Quick Settings tile is introduced. This tile, now customizable by users, allows you to place food on a plate. This action attracts animated cats to your device. Upon a cat’s arrival, a notification appears, stating “A cat is here.” The feline will consume the offering, join your growing collection, and initiate the process anew.

Be warned: the pursuit of these digital cats can become quite captivating. The following steps will guide you through getting started.

Accessing the Easter Egg

Begin by navigating to the Settings menu. This is achieved by pulling down the notification shade twice, then selecting the cog icon.

Scroll to the bottom of the Settings menu and tap on ‘About .’

Repeatedly tap the “Android version” entry. This will launch a new screen featuring the “N” logo, representing Nougat.

Enabling the Cat Tile

Tap the “N” logo approximately five or six times, then perform a long press on it. A small cat emoji will appear at the bottom of the screen, seemingly without further action. However, a change has occurred!

Pull down the notification bar again to reveal the Quick Settings menu. Then, select “Edit.”

Within the “Drag to add tiles” menu, a new option will be visible, displaying a cat icon and the label “??? Android Easter Egg”. Long-press this tile and drag it upwards into the Quick Settings area.

Collecting Cats

Returning to the Quick Settings menu, the new icon will now read “Empty dish”. Tapping this icon will open a menu with four food choices: Bits, Fish, Chicken, and Treat. Select one to place it on the plate.

The process is now complete; you must wait. After a variable period, a notification will appear. If you are using an Android Wear watch, you may even experience a vibration resembling a cat’s purr.

Selecting the notification will open the “Cats” menu, where you can view your collected felines and their corresponding numbers. It appears there are a substantial number of cats to discover, potentially ranging from 100 to 999. Each cat can also be renamed with a simple tap.

Finally, to simply view your cat collection, long-press the cat Quick Settings tile. You can also share or delete cats from this menu.

While the practical value of these cats is debatable, this Easter Egg is undeniably one of the more inventive additions to Android. Even for those who aren’t feline enthusiasts, the collection process proves surprisingly enjoyable.
