Changing Text Case in Microsoft Word

Have you ever found yourself needing to adjust the capitalization of text you’ve already typed in Word? Rather than retyping the entire line, Word provides a quick and efficient method to alter the case of any selected text.

To modify the capitalization within a Word document, begin by selecting the specific text you wish to change. Ensure that the Home tab is currently active in the ribbon.

Accessing the Change Case Feature

Next, locate and click the Change Case button, which is situated on the Home tab. This action will reveal a drop-down menu containing various capitalization options.

The following capitalization styles are available for selection:

  • Sentence case: Only the initial letter of the first word in each sentence is capitalized.
  • lowercase: Converts all letters to lowercase.
  • UPPERCASE: Transforms all letters to uppercase.
  • Capitalize Each Word: Capitalizes the first letter of every word, ideal for titles or headings.
  • tOGGLE cASE: Inverts the case of each letter; uppercase letters become lowercase, and vice versa.

The Toggle Case option, while seemingly unusual, proves valuable when accidental Caps Lock usage occurs without autocorrection enabled. Simply highlight the incorrectly capitalized text and apply tOGGLE cASE to rectify it.

As an illustration, we will demonstrate converting selected text to all uppercase, or UPPERCASE.

Upon selecting a capitalization type, the chosen text is immediately updated to reflect the new formatting.

Following this, press the number “7” and subsequently choose an option: “S” for Sentence case, “l” (lowercase L) for lowercase, “U” for UPPERCASE, “C” for Capitalize Each Word, or “t” for tOGGLE cASE.
