Disable Hyperlinks in Word: A Step-by-Step Guide

Disabling Automatic Hyperlink Creation in Microsoft Word

When composing documents in Microsoft Word, the application often automatically converts web and email addresses into clickable hyperlinks. This functionality is governed by a default setting within Word’s AutoFormat feature.

These active hyperlinks offer convenience. Pressing “Ctrl” while clicking a web address will launch it in your default browser. Similarly, clicking an email address with “Ctrl” pressed opens your email program, pre-populating the “To” field.

However, if you prefer to avoid this automatic conversion, it’s straightforward to disable this AutoFormat setting. Begin by clicking the “File” tab within the Word interface.

Accessing Word Options

From the list presented on the left-hand side, select “Options.”

Navigating to Proofing Settings

The “Word Options” dialog box will appear. Within this window, click “Proofing” from the options listed on the left.

AutoCorrect Options

Locate the “AutoCorrect options” section and click the “AutoCorrect Options” button.

AutoFormat As You Type Tab

A new dialog box, titled “AutoCorrect,” will open. Select the “AutoFormat As You Type” tab.

Disabling Hyperlink Conversion

Within the “Replace as you type” section, find the “Internet and network paths with hyperlinks” check box. Ensure that this box is unchecked to disable automatic hyperlink creation.

Important Note: The “AutoFormat” tab also contains related settings. However, it applies to the automatic formatting of existing documents, differing from the “AutoFormat As You Type” feature which acts during text input.

Click “OK” to save your changes and close the “AutoCorrect” dialog box.

Confirming Changes

You will then be returned to the “Word Options” dialog box. Click “OK” again to close this window.

Following these steps, any web or email addresses you type will now be formatted as standard text, without being automatically converted into active hyperlinks.

Removing Existing Hyperlinks

If you have a document already containing hyperlinks that you wish to remove, select the entire document content. Then, press “Ctrl + Shift + F9” to unlink all hyperlinks.

Caution: Using “Ctrl + Shift + F9” will remove all types of fields within your document, including field codes, not solely web and email links.
