Create Secure Notes in OS X - A Step-by-Step Guide

Protecting Sensitive Information on OS X with Secure Notes
The challenge of remembering numerous passwords and other confidential details is a common one. While the impulse to jot them down might be strong, this practice is generally discouraged due to security risks.
Fortunately, users of OS X have a built-in solution: Secure Notes. These function as password-protected text files stored within your Keychain, allowing you to create as many secure records as needed, all protected by a single master password.
Creating a New Secure Note
To begin, launch the Keychain Access utility. This application is located in the Utilities folder, or can be easily found using Spotlight search.
Within Keychain Access, you'll observe a list of "Keychains" and, beneath them, six distinct categories. Select the "Secure Notes" category.

Initiate the creation of a new note by clicking the "+" button at the bottom of the utility window.

Adding Details to Your Note
A dialog box will appear, prompting you to enter a "Keychain Item Name" for your new secure note. This is how the note will be identified within Keychain Access.
Subsequently, you can add the detailed content of your note within the provided field.

The newly created secure note is saved within the "login" keychain by default. Alternative keychain locations, such as "iCloud", "System", "Sophos", or "System Roots", are also available, though the choice of keychain is largely inconsequential for basic private note storage.

Accessing and Managing Secure Notes
Once created, double-clicking a secure note allows you to control application access. You can grant access to all applications or specify individual ones.
Furthermore, you can configure the system to require your Keychain password before any application can access the note's contents.

The "Attributes" option provides functionality to modify the note's name, view its creation and modification dates, and display the note's content.

Selecting "show note" will trigger a password prompt. Choosing "Always Allow" bypasses the password requirement for future access. To maintain security, it is recommended to select "Allow" to be prompted for the password each time the note is opened.

Utilizing Secure Notes Effectively
Secure Notes offer a convenient method for safeguarding private or confidential information. You can easily copy and paste lengthy content or transfer data from other sources into your secure note, then delete the original source.
It’s crucial to remember that the security of your secure notes is directly tied to the strength of your Keychain password. While passwords aren't the most robust security measure, they remain essential for protecting Keychain items. Therefore, employ a strong, difficult-to-guess password.
