Create Photo Slideshows & Projects - Easy Guide

Apple Photos: Creating Slideshows and Projects
Following its recent release as part of an OS X system update, Apple’s new Photos application has been the subject of much discussion. This article will detail the process of creating slideshows, as well as other projects like calendars, cards, and photo books.
A Streamlined Photo Management Tool
The Photos application is designed to be a user-friendly, native photo management solution for OS X. Its core functionality centers around photo editing and seamless synchronization with iCloud.
This iCloud integration ensures that your photos are consistently available across all your Apple devices, including Macs, iPhones, and iPads.
Slideshows and Export Options
Similar to its predecessor, iPhoto, Photos allows users to quickly establish slideshows for convenient viewing. Furthermore, it facilitates the export of photos for a diverse range of projects.
These projects encompass the creation of personalized calendars, books, and greeting cards.
Personalized Gifts
Through these features, users are empowered to design and produce high-quality, professionally-appearing gifts.
These gifts are ideal for colleagues, family members, and friends, offering a personal touch for any occasion.
Generating Rapid Photo Slideshows
Slideshow creation can be initiated utilizing either images sourced from your device’s camera roll or pre-existing albums.
A slideshow can be swiftly generated from photos captured on a specific date by selecting the play button located in the top-right corner.

A panel will then appear, allowing for the selection of visual effects and accompanying music. Music choices can be made from your iTunes library or from pre-defined themes.

The process is straightforward; simply click "Play Slideshow" once you are satisfied with your selections to begin viewing.
While this method offers a fast and convenient slideshow experience, it doesn’t constitute a full-fledged project. For more elaborate creations, album creation is recommended as a first step.
Organizing Photos into Albums for Projects
Whether you intend to design a photo book, a calendar, or even a simple greeting card, some preliminary photo editing and album organization is beneficial. This allows for streamlined export to your desired project.
To begin adding photos to an album, simply select the desired image or images and click the "+" icon located adjacent to the slideshow play button.

Pay close attention to the subsequent menu, as we will revisit its options shortly. The displayed menu presents several choices, but our initial focus is on organizing the project before its creation.
Select the "Album" option from the menu.

Upon creating a new album, you will be prompted to assign it a name. This name will then appear within the "Album" selections for future use. For this example, we will name our first album "Food."

Now you can proceed through your camera roll, adding relevant food photographs to the newly created "Food" album.
Alternatively, navigate to the "All Photos" album and utilize the "Command" key in conjunction with selection to choose multiple photos simultaneously.

Following this, click the "+" icon in the upper-right corner to add the selected images to your designated album.
Initiating a New Project Utilizing an Existing Album
We will now demonstrate the process of creating a new project using our completed "Food" album as a source. Photos can be selected for inclusion by clicking on each desired image while simultaneously pressing the "Command" key.

As previously discussed, a slideshow can be initiated by clicking the play button. Alternatively, clicking the "+" icon reveals a range of available project options.

To exemplify project creation, let's begin with a book. Selecting "Book" from the options presents various format and pricing choices.

After a format is chosen, a theme is selected, and then "Create Book" is clicked to commence the project.

Upon initialization, the project wizard arranges the selected photos in the order they were chosen. Rearranging images to a preferred sequence is straightforward; simply click and drag them to the desired page.

In the upper-right corner, four buttons provide functionality for page management, layout options, project settings, and ultimately, purchasing the completed book.
It's important to note that adding elements like pages or months will affect the project's total cost. The displayed figures will dynamically update to reflect these changes.

The project settings button is particularly useful. From this interface, you can quickly modify the page count, theme, format, size, and other parameters.

To customize the layout of individual pages, select the page and then access the layout options. This allows control over page arrangement and background color.

A double-click on a page allows for focused editing, enabling photo rearrangement and text modification.

A "Photos" tray appears at the bottom of the project window. This tray facilitates sorting through both placed and unused photos, auto-filling layouts, clearing placed images, and, crucially, adding additional photos to the project.

When new photos are added, they initially appear in the tray as unused. They must then be placed manually in the desired locations within the project.

This outlines the fundamental aspects of creating projects within Photos. While more advanced features exist, each project generally follows a similar workflow. We believe you will be able to explore and master the remaining functionalities independently.
Pause, Order Prints, and Explore Slideshow Capabilities
Completing a project doesn't necessitate immediate finalization or ordering. Your completed and ongoing projects are now conveniently located within the "Projects" window for easy access.

In addition to photo books, calendars, and greeting cards, the option to order individual prints of your images is also available.

Personalized slideshows can be crafted, named, saved, and then enjoyed for both everyday viewing and special events.
Utilizing the add button to initiate a custom slideshow provides expanded control compared to the quick slideshow creation method previously demonstrated. Beyond selecting themes and music, you can define the display duration for each slide and choose desired transition effects.

Should you require additional images, simply click the "+" icon situated on the right side of the photo tray at the bottom of the screen. Photos can be rearranged by dragging them into your preferred sequence. Preview your slideshow at any time by clicking the "Preview" button.
Because this is a project-based slideshow, it remains editable within the "Projects" window.

The slideshow can be exported as a movie file, facilitating easy sharing with friends and family.

The Photos application is clearly designed for users who wish to actively utilize their images. While the synchronization and sharing capabilities across devices are valuable, having a tangible output to view and appreciate without relying on a smartphone or tablet is also a significant benefit.
Notably, projects are straightforward to create, often achievable within minutes, while still offering sufficient customization options to ensure a uniquely personal result.
