Typically, the Windows operating system is installed onto a single partition of your computer’s hard drive. However, it is possible to divide your hard drive into multiple partitions, allowing for the separate storage of data and system files.

Setting Up Partitions During Windows Installation
A dedicated data partition can be established during the installation of Windows 7 or Windows 8 by choosing the Custom installation type. Proceed through the standard installation steps until you encounter the "Which type of installation do you want?" prompt. Then, select the Custom option.
The subsequent screen will present you with a link labeled Drive options (advanced). Clicking this link is the next necessary step.
Creating New Partitions
To define multiple partitions, utilize the New button. Specify the desired size for each individual partition you wish to create.
Once you are satisfied with the allocated partition sizes, choose the partition designated for the Windows installation. Then, proceed by clicking the Next button.
Windows will then be installed onto the selected partition. Any remaining space on the other partitions will be recognized as independent drive letters within the Windows operating system.
This method allows for a clear separation between the operating system files and your personal data. This can be beneficial for system maintenance and data security.

It is common for Windows to be initially installed onto a single partition of the hard drive. Should this be the case, the existing system partition can be resized to generate free space. A new partition can then be created within this newly available space, all directly from within the Windows operating system.
Accessing the Disk Management tool within Windows is necessary to accomplish this. On Windows 8, either press the Windows Key + X or right-click the lower-left corner of the screen and choose Disk Management. For Windows 7 users, press the Start button, type manage disks into the search field, and then press Enter.
Within the Disk Management window, locate and right-click your C: partition. From the context menu, select the "Shrink Volume" option.
Important Note: Prior to any partition modifications, it is crucial to create backups of all important data. While this process is generally safe, the possibility of data loss exists when altering partition structures.
Specify the amount of space, in megabytes (MB), by which you wish to reduce the partition size. For instance, to create a 100 GB data partition, enter 102400 into the provided field and click the Shrink button.
Sufficient free space must be available on the partition to allow for shrinking. If only 20 GB of free space exists, the partition cannot be reduced by more than 20 GB. If more space is needed, consider temporarily transferring files to an external drive, deleting them from the original partition, and then copying them back to the new data partition.
Once the shrinking process is finished, right-click within the newly created Unallocated space. Select "New Simple Volume" to initiate the creation of a new partition from this unpartitioned area.
Proceed through the wizard, assigning your preferred drive letter to the newly formed partition. Upon completion of this process, a dedicated data partition will be established.
Leveraging a Dedicated Data Partition
To maximize the benefits of a separate data partition, it’s recommended to store all of your personal files there. This process can be streamlined by relocating your user data folders – such as Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and Videos – to your external drive.
This is achieved within Windows Explorer (or File Explorer in Windows 8) by right-clicking each respective folder and utilizing the options found within the Location tab.
Installing the majority of applications directly onto the data partition isn't generally advisable, as they would require reinstallation following a Windows reinstall. However, certain programs offer the functionality to be stored on the data partition and remain accessible even after a Windows reinstall.
For instance, Steam by Valve and games from Blizzard can be launched directly from a folder without necessitating a re-download or reinstallation post-Windows reinstall. Simply execute the .exe file from the designated folder to begin playing.

Reinstalling Windows becomes a cleaner process when a data partition is in place, allowing for a clean format of the system drive while preserving all files on the separate data partition.
If you utilize a dual-boot configuration with multiple Windows versions, each installation can access the data residing on the dedicated partition without interfering with the system partitions of the other operating systems.
