Convert Videos on Mac - No Software Needed

Optimizing Video File Sizes for iOS Devices Using macOS
Large video files can quickly consume significant storage space on your iPad or iPhone. Fortunately, you can resize these videos for mobile playback directly on your Mac, without needing to install any extra applications.
Leveraging Apple's QuickTime Player
For those with experience using computers, Apple's QuickTime software is likely a familiar name. Present since the early 1990s, QuickTime remains the standard video playback application included with OS X.
While QuickTime supports a wide range of video formats, it doesn't natively handle all of them. The growing popularity of the MKV format, for instance, has led many users to explore alternatives like VLC.
Converting Videos with QuickTime
However, for the file types that QuickTime does support, it offers a built-in conversion feature. This allows you to reduce video file sizes, making them ideal for viewing on your iPhone and iPad.
The conversion process ensures compatibility and optimizes the video for smaller screens. This is particularly useful when transferring videos to portable devices.
By utilizing QuickTime’s capabilities, you can efficiently manage your video library and avoid storage issues on your iOS devices.
Converting Videos Using QuickTime's Export Feature
The initial step involves opening the desired video file within the QuickTime application.
Following this, navigate to the "File" menu and subsequently select the "Export" option. The Export menu presents six distinct choices: videos can be saved in resolutions of 480p, 720p, and 1080p, the audio can be extracted independently, or the video can be saved directly to iTunes for casting to AirPlay-enabled devices such as an Apple TV.
For users with an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, selecting the option labeled "iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, & Apple TV..." will optimize the video for playback on these devices. This is the method we will demonstrate.

The subsequent screen displays three available options, though in this instance, only two are enabled. The "iPad, iPhone 4 & Apple TV" option is the one we will choose.

After selecting the desired resolution, click the "Save" button located in the lower-right corner. You will also be prompted to specify a location for the newly converted video file.

Confirm your save location by clicking the "Save" button again, initiating the export process. Progress can be monitored through the "Export Progress" window. The process can be halted at any time by clicking the circular "X" button adjacent to the progress indicator.

Multiple videos can be queued for conversion, processing each file sequentially. This allows for background conversion, freeing you to perform other tasks while the videos are being transformed.
Should QuickTime encounter difficulty opening a specific file, consider utilizing Handbrake, a free application capable of handling a wide variety of video formats.
