Logitech Harmony Remote Smarthome Control - Setup & Guide

Integrating Smarthome Devices with Your Logitech Harmony Remote

Certain Logitech remotes feature dedicated buttons for controlling smarthome devices. These can be utilized with products such as Philips Hue lighting systems, Nest thermostats, and Belkin WeMo smart plugs.

A comprehensive list of compatible smarthome devices supported by Logitech is available on their website. (Refer to Logitech’s official documentation for the complete listing.)

Setup via the Harmony App

Unlike traditional home theater equipment, complete remote programming isn't achievable through the MyHarmony desktop software. Configuration for smarthome integration necessitates the use of the Harmony application, accessible on both iOS and Android platforms.

This guide presumes that your Logitech Harmony universal remote is already configured for your home theater system. If initial setup hasn't been completed, please consult our dedicated Harmony setup guide before proceeding.

Important Considerations for a Smooth Setup

It is highly recommended to adhere to these instructions meticulously. Logitech’s software, while supporting powerful hardware, can be complex and prone to issues.

Following the steps in the correct sequence minimizes the potential for complications, particularly when using remotes connected to the Harmony Hub.

Careful adherence to the outlined procedure will significantly increase the likelihood of a successful and trouble-free smarthome integration.

Integrating Smarthome Devices with Your Logitech Harmony Remote

To incorporate new smarthome devices into your Logitech Harmony system, launch the Harmony application on your smartphone or tablet. Access the right-hand sidebar and expand it for further options.

At the bottom of the screen, select "Edit Devices" to begin the device addition process.

A "+ Device" button will be displayed at the bottom of the screen; tap this to initiate the addition of a new device.

From the presented list, choose "Home Control," then select the specific smarthome device you wish to integrate. For this example, Philips Hue lights will be added.

It may be necessary to activate pairing mode on your smart device. In our case, this involved pressing the button located on the Hue Bridge to allow the Harmony Hub to detect it.

Subsequently, adhere to the on-screen prompts to import any desired features, such as pre-configured lighting scenes from Philips Hue. Confirm your selections by clicking the "Next" arrow in the upper-right corner.

The newly added device will now be visible in the right sidebar within the Harmony app. This process can be repeated for any additional smarthome devices you intend to connect.

Tips for Successful Integration

  • Ensure Compatibility: Verify that your smarthome devices are compatible with the Logitech Harmony system before attempting to connect them.
  • Pairing Mode: Always put your device into pairing mode as instructed by the manufacturer.
  • Hub Placement: Optimal placement of the Harmony Hub can improve device detection and control.

Streamlining Control Through Device Grouping

Organizing your smart home devices into groups can significantly simplify their management. This allows for unified control of multiple devices simultaneously. As an illustration, several Hue bulbs can be consolidated into a "Living Room" group.

This enables control of all living room lighting as a single unit via your Harmony remote.

To begin, expand the sidebar on the right-hand side of the interface and select "Edit Devices".

At the bottom of the screen, tap the "+ Group" button to initiate the group creation process.

Assign a descriptive name to the group. Then, carefully select the specific devices you wish to include within this newly formed group.

Proceed to the next step by clicking the arrow to continue the configuration.

The newly created group will now be visible in the right sidebar. This allows for more efficient and centralized control of the associated devices.

Utilizing Your Harmony Remote for Smarthome Control

Certain Harmony remotes, equipped for smarthome integration, feature dedicated buttons for managing up to four smarthome devices. These buttons are typically represented by icons such as light bulbs or power outlets.

To configure these buttons, launch the Harmony application on your device and select the menu icon located in the upper left corner. Navigate then to  Harmony Setup > Add/Edit Devices & Activities.

Within this menu, choose the "Remote & Hub" category.

From the displayed list, select your specific remote model; in this example, we are using a "Harmony Elite".

Access the customization options for the Home Control Buttons by tapping the corresponding selection.

To assign a function, tap on one of the buttons and then select the "Assign" option.

Choose the device or device group you wish to control with the selected button. For instance, we are configuring control for the "Living Room" light group previously created.

Upon selection, you will be returned to the Home Control Buttons page. It's important to note that customization of button actions is limited; however, the assigned functions are displayed below. A brief press activates the lights, a prolonged press deactivates them, and the central rocker switch regulates brightness.

While a greater degree of customization would be beneficial, Logitech has seemingly left this functionality incompletely implemented.

Repeat this procedure for each of the remaining buttons. Once all assignments are complete, tap the "Next" button to save your changes.

Creating Custom Activities for Device Control

For comprehensive personalization of your smart home ecosystem, touch screen remotes offer the ability to design activities for your connected devices. These can range from straightforward commands like "Dim Lights" to more intricate sequences such as "Lower blinds, adjust lighting, and initiate home theater playback." This functionality surpasses the limitations of standard hardware buttons, which often lack extensive customization options.

To begin adding activities, navigate to the Harmony app and expand the left-hand sidebar. Then, select "Edit Activities."

Locate and tap the "Add Activity" button positioned at the bottom of the screen.

On the subsequent screen, choose the option "Add Your Own Activity."

how-to-control-your-smarthome-devices-with-a-logitech-harmony-remote-20.jpg

Assign a descriptive name to your activity and select a corresponding icon. This icon will be displayed on your remote control interface. As an illustration, we are establishing an activity named "Lights Dim" which will reduce our living room lights to 30% brightness, ideal for movie viewing. Click the Next arrow to proceed.

The next step involves selecting the devices that will participate in the activity. For this particular example, we will include our three Living Room lights.

how-to-control-your-smarthome-devices-with-a-logitech-harmony-remote-22.jpg

The system will then inquire about your desired actions for any entertainment devices involved in the activity. In our scenario, we intend to leave these devices unaffected, so we will select "Leave everything as is."

how-to-control-your-smarthome-devices-with-a-logitech-harmony-remote-23.jpg

You will now configure the actions that occur when the activity is initiated, as well as those that take place when it concludes. Tap the Next arrow to continue.

how-to-control-your-smarthome-devices-with-a-logitech-harmony-remote-24.jpg

For our example, we want each light bulb to activate at 30% dimming when the activity begins. Therefore, we will configure the lights on this screen...

...and then tap the Next arrow once the configuration is complete.

how-to-control-your-smarthome-devices-with-a-logitech-harmony-remote-26.jpg

Next, replicate this process for the activity's termination. In our case, the activity is designed as a single button press, so we will bypass this step by selecting the Skip button.

how-to-control-your-smarthome-devices-with-a-logitech-harmony-remote-27.jpg

The setup is now finalized. This is a relatively simple illustration, but the potential is substantial. For instance, you could create a "Movie Night" activity that simultaneously activates your home theater system, switches to your Blu-Ray player, lowers your smart blinds, and dims your smart lights. Furthermore, you can configure the system to restore the lights to their previous brightness when switching to a different activity by adjusting their state upon activity completion. Your creativity, and the number of smart devices in your home, are the only limitations.

A truly immersive home theater experience extends beyond just a television and speakers. Elements like lighting, window coverings, and even temperature control contribute significantly to the overall ambiance. Therefore, it’s logical to manage these components from a central remote. You can now transition between viewing modes – from watching sports to enjoying a film – with just a few button presses, all without leaving the comfort of your sofa.
