Internet Explorer History Management: A Comprehensive Guide
Contrary to some beliefs, Internet Explorer remains in use today. Although its market share has diminished over time, it still retains approximately 15% of users, indicating a significant user base.
Therefore, it’s crucial for individuals utilizing Internet Explorer to be aware that, like other web browsers, it maintains a record of visited websites. Users also have the ability to customize their history settings.
Accessing and Clearing Your Browsing History
Deleting your Internet Explorer browsing history can be performed through the Windows Internet Options panel. This panel is accessible in two ways.
If Internet Explorer isn't currently open, navigate to the Control Panel and select "Internet Options". Alternatively, you can open the Start menu and search directly for "Internet Options" to reach the same settings page.
Should Internet Explorer be running, simply click the gear icon located in the upper-right corner of the browser window and choose "Internet options".
Within the Internet Options window, locate the "Browsing history" section on the General tab. Then, click the "Delete..." button to proceed.
History Deletion Options
A dialog box will appear, presenting you with various options for clearing your browsing data. At a minimum, it is generally recommended to clear temporary files and your browsing history.
You can also choose to preserve data stored from your favorites. This ensures that websites you've saved as favorites remain accessible even after clearing cookies and temporary internet files.
Automated History Management
To automatically clear your history on a regular schedule, click the "Settings" button within the Internet Options panel.
The Website Data Settings dialog allows you to configure how Internet Explorer manages cached files. You can adjust the frequency with which it checks for updated versions of stored pages under the "Temporary Internet Files" tab.
Furthermore, you can define the maximum disk space allocated for these files and even change the folder location where they are stored. Options to view the folder’s contents and relocate it are also provided.
Under the "History" tab, you can specify the duration for which Internet Explorer retains your browsing history; the default setting is twenty days.
The "Caches and databases" tab provides control over website caches and databases. You can set size limits, receive notifications when these limits are exceeded, and individually clear each cache or database.
While adjusting these settings is optional, understanding their availability is beneficial. Ultimately, the most important function is the "Delete" button found on the General tab.
Automatic Deletion on Exit
You can also configure Internet Explorer to automatically delete your browsing history each time you close the browser.
However, be aware that if you frequently visit websites requiring logins, clearing your history upon exit may necessitate repeated logins during subsequent browsing sessions.
