Automatically Turn Off Nest Thermostat When Cool - Guide

Automating Nest Thermostat Control with Cooler Temperatures

As warmer weather approaches, air conditioning systems are frequently activated. However, there are instances when the temperature decreases to a comfortable level. This article details how to configure your Nest Thermostat to automatically deactivate when the external temperature falls.

Leveraging IFTTT for Automated Control

A convenient online platform known as IFTTT allows you to instruct your Nest Thermostat to switch off automatically when the weather reaches a predetermined temperature. This enables you to open windows and conserve energy by avoiding unnecessary AC operation.

Consider a scenario where the outdoor temperature reaches 73 degrees Fahrenheit – ideal for natural cooling. However, your home's interior remains warm, and the air conditioner continues to run. In such cases, automated control proves beneficial. Automatically disabling your thermostat when the weather is pleasant can lead to cost savings and increased convenience.

If you are new to IFTTT, a comprehensive guide is available to assist you in creating an account and connecting your applications. Once familiar, you can proceed to establish your Nest Thermostat IFTTT recipe.

We have pre-configured the recipe for your convenience and embedded it below. If you possess prior IFTTT experience, simply click the “Add” button to activate it. You may need to connect the Weather channel and the Nest Thermostat channel if they haven't been linked previously.

After connecting the Nest Thermostat channel and accessing the "Create an Action" page, select "Set temperature". Since IFTTT cannot directly turn off your thermostat, it will instead set it to a higher temperature, effectively disabling the AC.

On the subsequent screen, choose your Nest Thermostat under "Which device?" and enter a high temperature, such as 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Click "Create Action" to proceed.

Ongoing Operation and Additional Options

From this point forward, whenever the outdoor temperature falls below your specified threshold, your Nest Thermostat will be adjusted to the higher temperature, effectively turning off the AC and allowing you to open windows.

You can also create an additional recipe to receive a text message notification when this occurs. Simply replicate the trigger and configure the action to send a text message. Alternatively, you could rely on the notification and manually adjust your thermostat.

Furthermore, you could establish another recipe to alert you when the temperature rises, prompting you to reactivate your Nest Thermostat, though this is optional.
