Managing Opera’s Startup and Exit Behavior

A previous article detailed how to consistently display the startup dialog in Opera. This dialog allows users to define the browser’s initial state upon opening, including the pages that are shown.

Access to these settings, as well as those controlling Opera’s behavior upon closing, is achieved through the Opera menu by selecting Settings, then Preferences.

Restoring Previous Sessions

To automatically restore your previous browsing session, ensuring all open tabs are reloaded when Opera is launched, choose “Continue from last time” from the Startup dropdown menu located on the General tab.

Confirming Browser Exit

A confirmation dialog can be prompted each time Opera is closed. To enable this feature, navigate to the Advanced tab within the Preferences dialog box.

From the menu on the left, select Browsing, and then check the “Confirm exit” box to activate the confirmation prompt.

Automated Cleanup on Exit

Opera offers options to automatically perform cleanup tasks when the browser is closed. These can be found within the Advanced tab of the Preferences dialog.

Clearing the Disk Cache

To automatically clear the webpages stored in the disk cache upon exiting Opera, select “History” from the left-hand menu. Then, check the “Empty on exit” box located below the Disk cache dropdown.

Note: Clearing the cache may result in slightly slower page loading times.

Deleting New Cookies

Any new cookies generated during a browsing session can be automatically deleted when Opera is closed. To enable this, select “Cookies” from the menu on the left side of the Advanced tab.

Ensure the “Delete new cookies when exiting Opera” box is checked.
