Hide or Show Menu Bar on Mac: A Simple Guide

Mac OS X Menu Bar: Hiding and Showing Options

While Windows operating system users possess the functionality to conceal the Taskbar, macOS users have traditionally experienced a consistently visible menu bar. This isn't inherently problematic, as the menu bar’s footprint is relatively small.

However, if a user desires to hide the menu bar, this is now achievable. The macOS menu bar offers considerable flexibility.

Menu Bar Versatility

  • New controls can be added to enhance its functionality.
  • Additional options are accessible through the use of the "Option" key.
  • Menu bar icons can be repositioned by holding down the "Command" key.

This capability was introduced in Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan, alongside a suite of other valuable enhancements. A less publicized feature within this update was the ability to toggle the visibility of the menu bar.

Traditionally, the menu bar has remained persistently displayed regardless of the user’s activity on their Mac, with exceptions for fullscreen video viewing or gaming. Although it doesn't consume significant vertical screen real estate, the option to conceal it provides increased screen space.

Enabling Automatic Hiding

To enable the automatic hiding and showing of the menu bar, navigate to your Mac’s System Preferences and select the "General" settings. The interface remains largely consistent with the Yosemite version.

A new feature has been added directly below the dark menu bar option. This option, labeled "Automatically hide and show the menu bar", performs precisely as described when activated.

Upon checking this box, the menu bar will immediately retract towards the top of the screen.

To restore the menu bar, simply move your mouse cursor to the top edge of the screen, and it will reappear. Moving the cursor away will cause it to disappear once more.

If you find this feature undesirable, you can easily disable it by returning to the General settings and unchecking the box.
