Add Contact Widget to Android Home Screen - Quick Guide

Streamlining Communication with Home Screen Contact Shortcuts
Many individuals maintain frequent contact with specific people via calls or texts. Navigating a lengthy contact list can be time-consuming. A convenient solution is to create a speed dial shortcut directly on your device’s Home screen.
This guide details the process for both Google and Samsung Android devices.
Google Device Instructions
We utilized a Nexus 7 tablet for this demonstration. Begin by tapping the “All Apps” icon located on your Home screen.

The “Apps” tab will appear. Select the “Widgets” tab from the options presented.

Scroll upwards through the widget list until the “Contact” widget is located. Tap and hold the widget, then drag it to your preferred position on the Home screen.
Note: On smartphones, multiple “Contact” widget types are typically available. These allow for direct calling or text messaging, as demonstrated in the Samsung device instructions below.

The “Choose a contact shortcut” screen will then be displayed. Locate and tap the contact you wish to add to the Home screen.

The selected contact is now added to your Home screen. Tapping this new widget will directly open the contact within your address book.

Samsung Device Instructions
Using a Galaxy Note 4 phone as an example, touch and hold an empty area on the Home screen.

The Home screen will minimize, revealing three icons at the bottom of the screen. Select the “Widgets” icon.

Scroll upwards to browse the available widgets until you reach the “Contacts” widgets. Three options are available: one to open the contact in your address book, one for one-touch calling, and one for direct access to messaging with that contact. For this example, we will add a “Direct Message” widget. Touch and hold the desired widget icon and drag it to your Home screen.

Search for the contact you want to link to the widget and tap on their name.

The contact widget is now successfully added to your Home screen.

You can now initiate calls or texts with a single tap. Further customization options for your Android Home screen are also available.
