Tapback Reactions in macOS Sierra Messages

While iOS 10 brought significant enhancements to Messages, the macOS Sierra version received a more modest update. Nevertheless, certain features from iOS 10 were incorporated, including tapback comments.

Tapbacks function as they are named: they allow for a reply to a message through a simple "tap back" utilizing one of six pre-defined reactions. These reactions are designed to streamline communication and reduce typing, although users with a full-sized keyboard, such as those on a Mac, may find them less essential.

Using Tapbacks for Quick Replies

If a concise response is desired, rather than composing a lengthy message, Tapbacks can prove to be a convenient option.

To utilize a Tapback, locate the message you wish to respond to and right-click on it. From the context menu that appears, select the "Tapback" option located at the top.

Tapbacks aren't limited to responding to incoming messages. They can also be added to your own messages to add emphasis or inject a lighter tone into the conversation.

It's important to note that Tapback functionality is restricted to users also utilizing iMessage. When sent to Android devices, Tapbacks will not be visible. Similarly, users running operating systems older than macOS Sierra or iOS 10 will be unable to view or interact with Tapbacks.

Although currently not widely known, Tapbacks offer a practical communication tool. Their convenience may lead to frequent use once users become familiar with the feature. Even occasional use can prove beneficial.
