Add Program to Ubuntu Startup - After Login

Automating Application Startup in Ubuntu

Users transitioning from Windows often seek a method to automatically launch applications upon login. A common practice in Windows involves placing shortcuts within the Startup folder.

Ubuntu offers a comparable functionality, though the tool isn't immediately obvious. This utility allows for similar automation, but its naming convention may make it less discoverable.

While advanced users can directly edit startup scripts to achieve this, a user-friendly interface is readily available.

Accessing the Startup Application Tool

The necessary tool is located within the System Settings. Navigate to the 'Sessions' menu item to access it.

Adding an Application to Startup

To add an application, simply click the 'Add' button. If the application's directory isn't included in your system's path, you must provide the complete path to the executable file.

For example, to automatically start the VMware Toolbox, you would enter 'vmware-toolbox' into the provided text box. Alternatively, a browsing function allows you to directly locate and select the desired application.

This method provides a straightforward way to ensure specific programs launch automatically each time you log in to your Ubuntu system.

Note: This functionality was tested on Ubuntu Edgy Eft.
