Honda and Astrobotic Collaborate on Lunar Power Solutions

Honda, a leading automotive manufacturer, and Astrobotic, a pioneering lunar technology company, have announced a partnership focused on lunar power generation.

Their joint effort will investigate the feasibility of utilizing Honda’s regenerative fuel cell (RFC) system to provide continuous power during extended lunar nights.

Exploring the LunaGrid Integration

The companies will collaborate to determine how Honda’s RFC technology can be seamlessly integrated into Astrobotic’s LunaGrid.

LunaGrid is a scalable power service designed around solar energy collection.

This partnership will involve conducting detailed “illumination studies” at prospective landing sites near the lunar south pole.

These studies will also assess the scalability of the system and the compatibility of its hardware and software components.

Addressing the Challenges of Lunar Nights

A significant obstacle to lunar exploration is surviving the approximately two-week-long lunar night.

During this period, temperatures can plummet to as low as -424 degrees Fahrenheit, rendering solar panels ineffective.

Honda’s RFC offers a solution by storing solar energy as hydrogen during daylight hours and reconverting it into electricity during the night, with water as the sole byproduct.

A Closed-Loop Energy System

The water generated by the RFC is then repurposed within a high-pressure electrolysis system.

This process creates additional hydrogen, establishing what Honda describes as “a closed-loop energy cycle.”

Astrobotic’s Vertical Solar Array Technology

Astrobotic’s Vertical Solar Array Technology (VSAT) is engineered to maximize energy capture by continuously tracking the sun.

The initial VSAT design is projected to have a power capacity of up to 10 kilowatts.

An enhanced XL version is also under development, aiming to generate five times that amount of power.

Synergistic Power Generation

VSAT will capture sunlight during the lunar day to fuel the water electrolysis process.

Subsequently, the RFC will convert the stored hydrogen into electricity throughout the lunar night.

The ultimate goal is to achieve consistent and dependable power availability on the lunar surface.

Company Backgrounds and Ambitions

Founded in 2007 and based in Pittsburgh, Astrobotic is recognized for its Peregrine lunar lander.

Although the initial Peregrine mission didn’t fully succeed, the company continues to develop power and mobility systems to foster a thriving lunar economy.

This agreement represents Honda’s first public commitment to deploying its fuel cell technology on the moon, despite its extensive investment in fuel cell research and development.

Alignment with Japan’s Space Program

This collaboration also supports Japan’s broader objectives in space exploration.

Japan is a founding member of the Artemis Accords, a framework for international cooperation in lunar missions.

Japanese astronauts regularly participate in research activities aboard the International Space Station.

The Significance of the Lunar South Pole

The lunar south pole is a key focus of NASA’s Artemis program due to its near-constant sunlight exposure and the potential presence of substantial water ice deposits.

Power systems like LunaGrid, combined with Honda’s RFC, could facilitate more ambitious future missions and ultimately enable a sustained human presence on the moon.
