Hinge AI: End Small Talk & Find Better Dates

Hinge Addresses Match Silence with AI-Powered Conversation Starters
A growing number of Hinge users express frustration with matches who register a like but fail to initiate communication. This often results in an uncomfortable lull, placing the onus of starting a dialogue solely on one individual.
Rather than crafting thoughtful opening messages, some resort to predictable phrases or engage in uninspired small talk, such as a simple “How are you?” inquiry.
Introducing “Convo Starters”
To combat this issue, Hinge has introduced “Convo Starters,” a new feature leveraging AI to provide personalized suggestions for beginning conversations.
The intention behind this feature is to empower daters and increase their confidence when sending initial messages.
When a user likes a profile, they will now be presented with three customized tips displayed beneath each photo and prompt. The AI analyzes the user’s profile and generates recommendations based on specific photos or prompts.
For instance, if a potential match is depicted playing chess, Hinge might suggest initiating a conversation centered around board games.
Data Supports the Need for Engagement
Hinge states that Convo Starters was developed directly in response to user feedback. Research conducted by the company indicates that 72% of Hinge daters are more likely to consider someone who sends a like accompanied by a message.
Furthermore, data from Hinge reveals that users who include a comment with their likes are twice as likely to secure a date.
This new functionality builds upon the recent launch of Hinge’s AI-driven Prompt Feedback feature, which evaluates user prompts and offers tailored advice to enhance them.
The advice encourages users to provide more detailed and engaging information about their lives.
Gen Z Concerns Regarding AI in Dating
Despite the integration of AI features, a segment of Hinge users, particularly those from Generation Z, have expressed discomfort with utilizing AI in their online dating experiences.
A survey by Bloomberg Intelligence found that Gen Z exhibits greater unease regarding the use of AI for tasks like drafting profile prompts and composing responses compared to older demographics.
Match Group’s Investment in AI
Match Group, Hinge’s parent company, is currently allocating approximately $20 million to $30 million towards AI development efforts.
