Hinge Bans: A Fairer System for Account Restrictions

Hinge Modifies Account Suspension Policy

Hinge has announced a shift in its approach to policy violations, moving away from immediate, full account bans. Previously, a single rule-breaking element on a user’s profile could result in complete removal from the platform.

Now, instead of outright banning an account, Hinge will identify and remove the specific content that violates its guidelines. This allows users a chance to rectify the issue and retain access to the app.

How the New System Works

When a violation is detected, the user’s profile will be temporarily hidden from other users’ discovery feeds. This ensures the platform remains safe while the user addresses the flagged content.

Hinge will proactively inform users about the violation through both email and push notifications. A message will also appear directly within the app, prompting them to update their profile accordingly.

Types of Content That May Be Flagged

The following types of content are subject to being flagged for review:

  • Content deemed offensive, pornographic, violent, or discriminatory.
  • Material that promotes illegal activities or poses a risk of harm to others.
  • Any attempts to sell services or promote businesses through the platform.
  • Display of images or likenesses of individuals without their explicit consent, or depictions of minors lacking parental or guardian permission.
  • Other content that contravenes Hinge’s community standards.

According to Jeff Dunn, Hinge’s chief risk officer, this change is about transparency and user support. He stated to TechCrunch that the goal is to help users understand the policies and focus on building meaningful connections.

Repeated Violations Will Still Result in Bans

While Hinge is offering more leniency, it also clarifies that users who consistently disregard the platform’s terms of service will still face full account bans.
