The process of locating and removing spyware, viruses, and other types of malware from a computer can often feel like a continuous undertaking. This article explores several complimentary, no-cost tools provided by Trend Micro to enhance your anti-malware defenses.
Previously, we discussed the various methods through which malware can infiltrate a computer system. Asian Angel also presented a comprehensive guide detailing several free applications available for combating such threats. Trend Micro is a well-respected name in the field of malicious software protection, and we will now examine some of the free utilities they offer for detection and elimination of diverse malware forms.
HouseCall
Should your computer exhibit performance issues and you suspect malware as the cause, HouseCall serves as an on-demand scanner designed to identify and remove it.
This is a standalone application that requires no installation on your system. It can even be executed directly from a USB flash drive. Upon launching the program, it automatically updates with the latest virus definitions.
The user interface is straightforward and intuitive, providing essential functions for detecting and eliminating viruses and other malicious software.
Prior to initiating a scan, navigate to the Settings menu to select between a Quick, Full, or custom scan option.
Scan progress is displayed in real-time, showing detected results, and the process can be halted at any time if necessary.
When threats are identified, you can choose the appropriate action for each, then click the "Fix Now" button to proceed.
Version 7.1 (beta) was previously available, and the legacy version 6.5 remains downloadable, functioning within your browser and requiring either ActiveX or Java. It's important to note that 7.1 does not install on your computer, therefore lacking real-time protection; however, it provides a rapid scanning and removal solution when needed.

Bots are malicious programs that compromise your computer and integrate it into networks known as Botnets. These networks operate collectively across the Internet to distribute spam, infect other systems, and launch attacks against web servers, among other malicious activities. RUBotted is designed to install on your computer and monitor for suspicious behaviors, regularly updating its definitions to recognize bot-related activity.
It operates discreetly in the background, accessible from the system tray, and will prompt you to take action if a threat is detected.

This utility has been available for several years and remains effective in removing the troublesome CoolWeb infection, which proliferates across numerous directories on your PC. During my time in IT at a community college, this tool proved invaluable.
