Kathy Lueders on NASA's Future Space Exploration

Artemis and the Future of Space Operations with Kathy Lueders
The Artemis program, NASA’s latest initiative to create a lasting human presence on the moon, is currently in its initial phases. A significant portion of this ambitious project will be guided by Kathy Lueders.
Lueders will be sharing her insights at TechCrunch Sessions: Space, scheduled for December 14th and 15th next week.
A Veteran Leading New Missions
With a substantial history at NASA, Lueders has recently assumed the position of head of the newly established Space Operations Mission Directorate. This directorate will be responsible for managing launches and operations in near-Earth orbit for Artemis and related endeavors.
Her responsibilities will also encompass close collaboration with the International Space Station (ISS) as it nears the conclusion of its operational lifespan as a NASA asset.
From Commercial Crew to Operational Oversight
Previously, Lueders led NASA’s human spaceflight programs, overseeing the significant expansion of commercial crew missions. These missions were primarily facilitated by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets and the Dragon spacecraft.
Her current role allows her to maintain a focus on these essential daily operations. Meanwhile, research and development efforts will be largely directed by Jim Free at the Explorations Systems Development Mission Directorate.
While close collaboration between the two directorates is anticipated, Lueders will offer her perspective on the rationale behind this new organizational structure.
Exploring a Broad Range of Topics
The discussion will also cover a variety of other crucial areas, including robotic exploration initiatives and the development of space infrastructure.
Furthermore, the decommissioning of the ISS and Lueders’s passion for cultivating the next generation of space professionals – encompassing astronauts, engineers, and data analysts – will be addressed.
