DEI at TechCrunch Sessions: Justice - Uber, Facebook, Netflix

The Ongoing Pursuit of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Tech

Technology firms frequently encounter scrutiny regarding workplace dynamics and societal concerns. It’s now widely acknowledged that no organization is entirely free from challenges related to diversity. Consequently, the responsibility falls upon departments dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to cultivate environments that embrace individuals from all backgrounds.

Following the events of last year, specifically the tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others, numerous companies publicly expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement and the cause of Black lives. At TechCrunch Sessions: Justice, we will analyze the commitments made by these organizations at that time and assess their alignment with their current standing.

Addressing Systemic Issues

Our discussions will also challenge the commonly cited “pipeline problem” and explore the phenomenon of imposter syndrome. We aim to shift the focus away from individuals grappling with self-doubt and towards the underlying systems and cultures that perpetuate bias, sexism, and racism.

A comprehensive review of each company’s DEI initiatives over time will be conducted. This will highlight areas where progress has been achieved, as well as identify opportunities for further improvement.

To facilitate this crucial conversation, we have invited three prominent DEI leaders from Uber, Facebook, and Netflix to share their insights, challenges, and successes in driving genuine inclusivity within the technology sector.

Meet the DEI Leaders

This recommendation came in response to allegations of sexual harassment made by former Uber engineer Susan Fowler.

During TC Sessions: Justice, a discussion will be held with Lee regarding Uber’s current progress and its commitment to doubling Black representation in leadership roles by 2025.
