Digital COVID-19 Vaccination Records | Healthvana

With the COVID-19 vaccination effort now in progress (though facing initial challenges), numerous organizations are contributing to its successful implementation. Healthvana, a health technology company initially dedicated to delivering digital patient information to those managing HIV, is assisting Los Angeles County in distributing mobile vaccination records via Apple’s Wallet application. While this technology may appear to simply offer convenient verification of vaccination status, Healthvana’s primary objective—and the technology’s core function—is to empower individuals to actively participate in their healthcare journey, rather than serve as an immunity credential.
“I often find that most healthcare systems appear outdated, reminiscent of Windows 95,” explains Ramin Bastani, CEO and founder of Healthvana. “Our platform, however, resembles Instagram. This distinction is crucial because patients are more likely to engage with systems they readily understand, communicate in familiar ways, and ultimately achieve improved health outcomes.”
Mr. Bastani highlights that the company initially applied this approach to patient education and communication within the context of HIV care, and their software demonstrably increased patient attendance at follow-up appointments by a factor of 7.4 compared to those receiving traditional reminders and information. Healthvana’s tools and methodology are designed not only to enhance individual health but also to reduce expenses for healthcare providers by minimizing the time spent resolving confusion and repeatedly contacting patients for follow-up, which can significantly impact the workload of clinicians and care teams.
“We also lower costs for healthcare providers by reducing the volume of calls from patients inquiring about their results, expressing difficulty logging in, or seeking clarification on terms like ‘SARS nonreactive’—issues we address through a simplified interface,” Bastani states. “This has made a substantial difference. Ultimately, I believe the key to effective healthcare lies in capturing patient attention and motivating them to take proactive steps regarding their well-being.”
This same principle drives Healthvana’s collaboration with LA County regarding COVID-19 immunization records—ensuring the effective distribution of its vaccination program. All currently authorized COVID-19 vaccines require a two-dose regimen, consisting of an initial injection followed by a booster dose administered at a later date. The primary aim of this partnership is to keep LA County residents informed about their COVID-19 vaccinations and when they are eligible for their second dose, leveraging Healthvana’s expertise in improving patient follow-up. The application also provides users with information about COVID-19 treatment, and importantly, prevention strategies and methods to limit transmission.
While Bastani emphasizes that Healthvana functions as “the final step” in message delivery, acknowledging the numerous other factors involved in determining appropriate care and prevention, their method of providing clear, actionable information has already yielded significant benefits in one critical area: contact tracing. In certain locations, Healthvana prompts users who have tested positive to anonymously notify their close contacts directly from their devices, offering them access to free testing options and relevant resources.
“In the greater Los Angeles area alone, in less than two months, over 12,000 individuals have been alerted to potential exposure through our platform,” Bastani reports. “Each of these individuals likely interacts with others, including family members—this is a powerful way to help curb the spread.”
This contrasts with the comparatively limited adoption of exposure notification tools integrated into iOS and Android devices through recent updates from Google and Apple, a rare joint effort. Despite the sound technology and focus on user privacy, usage rates have been modest; for example, Virginia’s app-based exposure notification system has generated only 388 alerts in the three months since its launch.
Healthvana’s commitment to delivering timely, relevant information in a user-friendly and engaging manner is demonstrably impacting the course of COVID-19 and its community spread. The company is currently exploring opportunities to launch similar programs nationwide, potentially improving national vaccination rates and enhancing how individuals manage COVID-19 after infection.
