HBO Max Announces Price Increases for All Subscription Tiers

Warner Bros. Discovery revealed on Tuesday that HBO Max is implementing price adjustments across its entire range of subscription plans. This signifies another increase in pricing within the competitive streaming landscape.

New Pricing Details

The Basic with Ads plan will now be available for $10.99 monthly, representing a $1 increment. An annual subscription to this tier is now $109.99, an increase of $10.

Subscribers choosing the Standard Plan will see a monthly cost of $18.49, a $1.50 rise. The annual cost for this plan is updated to $184.99, reflecting a $15 increase.

The Premium plan is now priced at $22.99 per month, a $2 increase. An annual subscription to the Premium tier will cost $229.99, marking a $20 increase.

These updated prices are effective immediately for all new subscribers. Current HBO Max customers will observe the changes during their subsequent billing cycle, beginning on or after November 20.

Recent Price Adjustments and Company Statements

HBO Max previously adjusted its pricing structure in June 2024.

The current adjustments follow statements made by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav a few weeks prior. At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, Zaslav emphasized the high caliber of content available on the platform.

Zaslav asserted that the service was previously underpriced, stating, “The fact that this is quality — and that’s true across our company, motion picture, TV production, and streaming quality — we all think that gives us a chance to raise prices.”

Password Sharing and Industry Trends

Zaslav also indicated that measures to restrict password sharing are forthcoming. Upon implementation, HBO Max will align with other major streaming providers, including Netflix and Disney+, in addressing this practice.

This move by HBO Max mirrors recent pricing strategies adopted by other streaming services. Both Disney+ and Hulu have recently increased subscription costs, as has Apple with its streaming service, with adjustments made in August.

These industry-wide price increases reflect a broader trend as streaming services seek to enhance profitability and continue investing in content creation.
