The extensive floodwaters have led to substantial production cuts for companies like Western Digital. Initial warnings from analysts regarding potential price hikes surfaced weeks ago, and these predictions are now being realized.

The price of Western Digital’s Caviar Green 2TB hard drive, sold via Amazon.com, has experienced a dramatic increase. It jumped from a low of $69.99 on October 15th to a high of $149.99 by October 28th.

While some retailers still offer the drive for under $100, availability at these prices is rapidly decreasing. Other hard drive manufacturers are also experiencing the effects of the disruption, resulting in widespread price increases across the board.

Looking Ahead: Timing of Price Stabilization

Predicting when prices will stabilize is challenging, as the flooding in Thailand continues and the timeline for water recession remains uncertain. Consumers planning to purchase a hard drive may want to postpone their purchase and monitor price tracking tools and browser extensions.

Considering Solid State Drives

This situation could present an opportune moment to consider investing in a solid state drive (SSD). Because SSDs utilize flash memory manufactured in separate facilities, their pricing is currently unaffected.

Although SSDs typically have a higher cost per gigabyte compared to traditional mechanical drives, the current circumstances are narrowing this price difference.
