Grok Imagine Now Available with NSFW Capabilities

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm, xAI, has officially launched Grok Imagine, its image and video generation tool, to all SuperGrok and Premium+ subscribers utilizing the iOS application. Consistent with Musk’s vision for Grok as an AI free from conventional constraints, the generator permits the creation of not-safe-for-work (NSFW) content.

Generating Images and Videos

Grok Imagine is designed to transform text or image prompts into 15-second videos complete with integrated audio. A distinctive feature is its “spicy mode,” which enables the generation of sexually explicit material, including depictions of partial female nudity.

However, there are boundaries to the level of explicitness allowed. Attempts to create highly explicit content often result in blurred images flagged as “moderated” and therefore inaccessible. Despite these limitations, the system is capable of producing semi-nude imagery.

Potential Concerns and Past Issues

The inclusion of NSFW content aligns with xAI’s previous releases, such as a recent hyper-sexualized anime AI companion. However, mirroring concerns with Grok’s unrestricted nature – which previously led to the dissemination of hateful and biased content – Grok Imagine presents the potential for unforeseen negative consequences.

Reports regarding the “spicy mode” initially surfaced last week when xAI employee Mati Roy mentioned its capability to generate nudity in a now-deleted post on X. TechCrunch has contacted xAI seeking further clarification.

Limitations and Celebrity Content

The existing restrictions within Grok Imagine are somewhat reassuring. The model also allows for the creation of content featuring public figures, including Donald Trump and Taylor Swift, but appears to have additional safeguards in place.

For instance, TechCrunch’s attempts to generate an image of Trump pregnant were unsuccessful. The system instead produced images of Trump holding a baby or standing alongside a pregnant woman.

Early Impressions and Competition

While still in its early stages, Grok Imagine aims to challenge established players in the AI image and video generation market, such as Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Runway, and various Chinese competitors.

Currently, the generated images and videos of humans exhibit a degree of artificiality, with skin textures that sometimes appear waxy and cartoon-like.

Performance and User Experience

Despite these early imperfections, the generator demonstrates impressive speed, producing images from text prompts in a matter of seconds. It also continuously generates new images as the user scrolls.

These images can then be seamlessly animated into stylized videos. The user interface is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly.

Musk has stated on X that the model will undergo continuous improvement with each passing day.
