Grok 3 Drives Increased Usage - Latest Updates

xAI's Grok 3: Initial User Engagement
Last week marked the release of Grok 3, the primary AI model developed by Elon Musk’s company, xAI. This model is the engine behind the Grok chatbot, accessible through mobile applications and a web interface. It also integrates directly into the X social media platform, also owned by Musk.
Significant Growth in Downloads and Active Users
Considering the highly competitive landscape of AI chatbots, the success of Grok 3 wasn't guaranteed. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, for instance, currently boasts 400 million weekly active users. However, initial data indicates a substantial level of user interest in the new model.
Sensor Tower, a firm specializing in market intelligence, estimates that global and U.S. mobile app downloads of Grok increased by over tenfold during the week of Grok 3’s launch, compared to the prior week. Furthermore, daily active users within the U.S. app experienced a surge exceeding 260%, while global daily active users rose fivefold week-over-week.
Expansion Contributes to Growth
It’s important to note that Grok 3’s release coincided with an expansion of the Grok app into several new markets across Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. A portion of the observed global growth can likely be attributed to this broadened availability.
Web App Usage Also Increases
Growth wasn't limited to mobile platforms. Data from Similarweb, a digital intelligence platform, reveals that U.S. daily visits to the Grok web app – specifically, Grok.com – climbed from approximately 189,000 to over 900,000 following the release of Grok 3. Globally, daily visits increased from 627,000 to 4.5 million.
Sustaining Momentum and Addressing Concerns
These figures are undeniably impressive. The key challenge now for xAI lies in sustaining this initial momentum and ensuring continued user engagement.
Recent incidents have the potential to hinder enthusiasm for Grok 3. The model temporarily censored unfavorable references to President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, an action xAI explained was due to the actions of a single employee. Prior to this, users identified that Grok 3 consistently advocated for the death penalty for both President Trump and Musk, a problem that was swiftly rectified by xAI.
Looking Ahead
Maintaining user trust and addressing these issues will be crucial for xAI as they navigate the evolving AI landscape.
