Amogy Seeks $90M to Reduce Truck Pollution with Green Ammonia

Amogy Secures $11.2 Million in Funding

Amogy, a company specializing in green ammonia technology, has successfully raised $11.2 million as part of a larger $90 million funding round, according to a recent SEC filing.

This funding goal represents a decrease from the $139 million Series B-1 round announced in March 2023. This shift reflects the current difficulties experienced by climate-focused startups in securing investment during the mid-stage of development.

Focus on Transportation Applications

Amogy’s core business centers around developing solutions for diverse transportation sectors. These include maritime shipping, long-haul trucking, and agricultural applications.

Earlier this year, the company successfully demonstrated its ammonia-to-power technology aboard a retrofitted tugboat. Prior testing had also been conducted using semi-tractors and farm tractors.

The Advantage of Ammonia as a Fuel

Numerous green ammonia companies are concentrating on long-distance transport. This is because ammonia can be utilized in existing internal combustion engines with minimal alterations.

However, ignition typically requires a supplemental fuel source, such as diesel or biofuel. While transitioning to ammonia significantly reduces, or even eliminates, carbon emissions, it can lead to the production of nitrogen oxides – pollutants linked to smog, acid rain, and global warming.

Amogy’s Unique Approach: Cracking Ammonia

Amogy distinguishes itself through a novel method. Instead of combusting the ammonia, the company employs a process to separate it into nitrogen and hydrogen.

The nitrogen is released as inert nitrogen gas, and the hydrogen powers a fuel cell. This fuel cell generates electricity and water as byproducts. Crucially, this system eliminates the need for any pilot fuel, resulting in zero-carbon emissions from the outset.

Potential for Maritime Industry Adoption

Although Amogy’s technology doesn’t rely on repurposing existing combustion engines, it is anticipated to attract interest, especially within the maritime industry.

The shipping sector is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, creating a strong incentive for adopting innovative, clean energy solutions like those offered by Amogy.
