Grammarly Redesign & New AI Features

Grammarly Unveils Redesigned Interface and Expanded AI Capabilities
Grammarly has launched a new, document-centric interface, leveraging the technology of Coda, the productivity company it acquired previously. This updated interface incorporates an AI assistant alongside several new AI-powered tools designed to aid both students and professionals.
New Interface Features
The redesigned interface utilizes a block-based system. This allows users to seamlessly integrate elements like tables, columns, separators, lists, and headings into their documents. Rich text blocks can also be added to emphasize key information or provide supplementary notes.
A dedicated sidebar provides access to the AI assistant. This assistant is capable of summarizing text, responding to inquiries, and offering suggestions to improve writing quality.
AI-Powered Tools
Several new AI tools are now available within Grammarly. “Reader Reactions” enables users to receive feedback on their writing tailored to a selected reader profile.
Additional tools include: “Grader,” which provides assessment based on instructor guidelines and available course materials; “Citation Finder,” assisting in locating and generating citations from publicly accessible sources; and “Paraphraser,” which adjusts a text’s tone to match user preferences.
Grammarly has also integrated agents designed to identify instances of plagiarism or content generated by artificial intelligence.
Accuracy of AI Detection
Luke Behnke, VP of enterprise product at Grammarly, acknowledged to TechCrunch that AI detection agents aren't always perfect. However, he asserted that the company has refined its agent to achieve the highest level of accuracy currently available.
He clarified that the intention isn’t to provide teachers with an enforcement tool. Instead, the AI detector aims to offer students insight into potential AI-generated content within their work before submission. The company recommends its authorship tool for policy enforcement.
Balancing AI Assistance and Detection
Grammarly now offers tools to both assist with AI-assisted writing and detect AI-generated content. The company explains this apparent duality stems from a “moral imperative” to educate students on effective AI utilization and prepare them for the future workforce.
Future Plans and Investment
Similar to many tech companies, Grammarly intends to expand its integration of AI agents throughout its product line. This ambition was highlighted by the recent acquisition of email client Superhuman.
In May, Grammarly secured $1 billion in funding from General Catalyst, earmarked for acquisitions and the enhancement of its sales and marketing initiatives.
