googling for ‘baby yoda’ will bring him into your living room via augmented reality

Google continues to delight users with engaging augmented reality features, recently offering a series of Halloween-themed AR experiences activated by specific search queries. These included playful apparitions like ghosts, jack-o'-lanterns, and animated skeletons!

Now, a new AR experience has been launched coinciding with the upcoming Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian. This feature allows you to virtually bring The Child – affectionately known by fans as “Baby Yoda” – directly into your home.

Interested in trying it out? Here’s how to access the experience: Follow these steps:

  1. Access Google.com through a web browser on an Android or iOS device.
  2. Enter “The Child,” “Baby Yoda,” or [The Child’s official name, withheld to avoid spoilers] into the search bar.
  3. Locate and select the “View in 3D” button, then tap the “View in your space” option. (The Google search app may be required on some devices; it functioned seamlessly on a Pixel device.)
  4. Allow the camera view to activate and slowly move your device around. The AR character should appear once the camera identifies a flat surface. Ensure your device’s volume is turned up.

I personally tested the feature and found it to function effectively, though performance varied between devices. It operated quickly and without issue on a Pixel, while my iPhone experienced some lighting glitches.

A camera icon enables you to capture both photographs and videos. You can also adjust the character’s position and orientation within your space using drag and pinch gestures to achieve the perfect shot. Enjoy!
