Google Introduces “Preferred Sources” for Search Results

A new feature, designated “Preferred Sources,” is currently being deployed by Google in both the United States and India. This functionality empowers users to designate their favored news websites and blogs for prominence within the Top Stories area of Google’s search results.

According to the company, activating this feature will result in a greater volume of content originating from the websites users have chosen to prioritize.

How the Feature Works

When users initiate a search for a specific subject, a “star” icon will become visible adjacent to the Top Stories section. Tapping this icon allows users to begin the process of adding preferred sources through a search function.

Upon source selection, refreshing the search results will dynamically update the display to showcase more content from the designated sources. Google has also indicated that, for certain search queries, a distinct “From your sources” section will appear beneath the standard Top Stories section.

This allows users to curate their news feed, focusing on publications they trust and enjoy.

Potential Implications

While this feature offers users greater control over their information intake, it also carries the potential to create what are known as ideological bubbles. Users may become less exposed to diverse perspectives on a given topic, reinforcing existing beliefs.

Testing and Rollout

Initially, “Preferred Sources” was launched as a Search Labs experiment, requiring users to actively opt-in to participate. During the testing period, it was observed that over 50% of participants selected four or more sources.

Following a successful trial, Google is now extending availability to all users conducting English language searches within the U.S. and India.
