Google Wallet Expands Digital ID Support - More States Added

Google Wallet Expands Digital ID Capabilities and Global Reach
Google revealed on Tuesday a significant expansion of digital ID functionality within Google Wallet, bringing the service to additional states and a wider range of applications.
The company also announced the introduction of a private age verification feature and a substantial increase in Wallet’s availability, extending its reach to 50 new countries.
Digital ID Availability Increases
Citizens residing in Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia will shortly have the capability to securely store their government-issued digital IDs directly within Google Wallet.
Furthermore, residents of Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, and New Mexico will gain the convenience of utilizing their mobile IDs when interacting with their respective Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
REAL ID and TSA Security
With the May 7, 2025, deadline for REAL ID compliance fast approaching, Google highlights the utility of ID Passes generated from U.S. passports.
These passes can be employed for streamlined passage through TSA security checkpoints at participating airports, even for individuals lacking a REAL ID driver’s license or state-issued identification.
It’s important to note that an ID Pass serves as a complement to, not a replacement for, a physical ID, and carrying the physical identification remains recommended.
Expanding Use Cases for Digital IDs
The functionality of digital IDs within Google Wallet is set to broaden considerably.
Users will soon be able to leverage their digital ID for account recovery on Amazon, access to online healthcare services via CVS and MyChart by Epic, and profile verification on platforms such as Uber.
International Expansion and UK Passport Support
In addition to the U.S. developments, Google is extending digital ID pass creation to residents of the United Kingdom.
UK citizens will be able to generate digital ID passes using their UK passports and store them securely within Google Wallet.
Privacy-Focused Age Verification
Recognizing the frequent need for age verification across numerous online services, Google prioritized the development of a system that balances verification accuracy with user privacy.
To this end, the company is integrating zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology into Google Wallet.
Zero-Knowledge Proof Technology
This integration will facilitate rapid and secure age verification across mobile devices, applications, and websites utilizing Google’s digital credential API.
Google intends to extend the use of ZKP to other products and is collaborating with applications like Bumble.
Bumble will utilize digital IDs from Google Wallet for identity verification and ZKP for age confirmation.
Furthermore, Google plans to open-source its ZKP technology, making it accessible to other wallets and online services.
Wallet's Global Footprint
Regarding the expansion to 50 additional countries, Google has not yet disclosed a specific list of locations.
