Gemini App Update: Real-Time AI Video & New Features

Gemini AI Chatbot Receives Significant Updates at Google I/O 2025
During Google I/O 2025, Google unveiled a series of enhancements for the Gemini AI chatbot application. These updates encompass wider availability of multimodal AI functionalities, advancements in AI models, and more integrated experiences across Google's product ecosystem.
Gemini Live: Real-Time Interaction with the World
Beginning Tuesday, the capabilities of Gemini Live, including camera and screen-sharing, are being extended to all iOS and Android users. This feature, leveraging Project Astra, enables users to engage in almost instantaneous verbal exchanges with Gemini.
Simultaneously, the AI model receives a live video stream from the user’s smartphone camera or screen.
Practical Applications of Gemini Live
Imagine exploring an unfamiliar city; users can now direct their phone’s camera towards a building and instantly inquire about its architectural style or historical significance, receiving prompt responses from Gemini Live.
Deeper Integration with Google Apps
In the coming weeks, Gemini Live will achieve greater synergy with other Google applications. Users will soon be able to obtain directions via Google Maps, schedule events in Google Calendar, and create task lists using Google Tasks, all through Gemini Live.
Competition in the AI Chatbot Landscape
These Gemini updates represent Google’s ongoing efforts to compete with rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Apple’s Siri, as well as other digital assistant providers. The increasing popularity of AI chatbots has introduced a novel method for users to interact with the internet and their devices.
This shift has created competitive pressure for major technology companies, including those reliant on search engines like Google Search and virtual assistants like Google Assistant. Google reported during I/O 2025 that Gemini currently boasts 400 million monthly active users, and anticipates further growth with these new features.
New AI Subscription Tiers
Google has introduced two new AI subscription options: Google AI Pro, a rebranding of the existing $20-per-month Gemini Advanced plan, and Google AI Ultra, a premium offering at $250 per month, directly competing with ChatGPT Pro.
The Ultra plan provides exceptionally high usage limits, prioritized access to the latest AI models, and exclusive features.
Gemini Integration with Chrome
Users in the U.S. subscribed to Pro or Ultra, with English selected as their language in Chrome, will gain access to Gemini directly within their browser. This integration allows users to request summaries or answers related to the content displayed on their screen.
Enhanced Deep Research Capabilities
Google is enhancing Deep Research, Gemini’s AI agent for generating comprehensive research reports. Users can now upload private PDFs and images for analysis.
Deep Research will then correlate this private data with publicly available information to produce more tailored reports. Integration with Drive and Gmail is planned for future release.
Improvements to Image and Video Generation
Free Gemini users will benefit from an updated AI image model, Imagen 4, which Google states delivers improved text rendering. Subscribers to the $250-per-month AI Ultra plan will also have access to Veo 3, Google’s newest AI video model, capable of generating synchronized sound with video scenes through integrated audio creation.
Gemini 2.5 Flash as the Default Model
Google is updating the default model within Gemini to Gemini 2.5 Flash, designed to deliver higher-quality responses with reduced latency.
Personalized Learning with Gemini
Recognizing the increasing use of AI chatbots by students, Google is introducing personalized quiz creation within Gemini. These quizzes will focus on areas where users demonstrate difficulty.
When incorrect answers are provided, Gemini will generate additional quizzes and personalized learning plans to reinforce understanding.
