Google AI Overviews & AI Mode: Testing a New Integration

Google Integrates AI Mode with Search Overviews
In response to increasing competition, particularly from OpenAI, Google has initiated testing of a new feature. This integration combines its AI Overviews with AI Mode within the Search experience.
This means users presented with the AI-generated summaries at the top of search results can now engage in follow-up questioning through a conversational interface.
Introducing AI Mode
Google’s conversational feature, known as AI Mode, was initially launched to users in the U.S. in May. Its availability was then expanded globally in August.
It allows for interactive dialogues with Google’s Gemini AI, mirroring the functionality of platforms like ChatGPT.
Previous Access Limitations
Previously, accessing AI Mode required users to anticipate the need for a more in-depth exploration. Simple queries were typically addressed through the standard search box.
Those expecting to ask multiple questions or delve into a topic extensively had to navigate to the dedicated AI Mode tab.
Streamlining the User Experience
Google is now evaluating the benefits of a unified experience. The company recognizes that initial searches often lead to a desire for further learning.
A query that begins simply can quickly evolve into a more complex investigation.
New Testing Phase
Announced on Monday, the new test allows users to “seamlessly go deeper” into AI Mode directly from the Search results page.
Currently, this feature is available only on mobile devices, with a global rollout underway.
Context of Increased Competition
This rollout coincides with internal adjustments at Google’s rival, OpenAI, which is prioritizing improvements to its chatbox experience and delaying other product launches.
The release of Gemini’s Nano Banana image model and other enhancements has contributed to Gemini reaching over 650 million monthly users as of November.
Combining the conversational mode with AI Overviews, which boasts 2 billion monthly users, could significantly boost Gemini’s consumer adoption rate.
Google’s Vision for Search
According to Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, users “shouldn’t have to think about where or how to ask your question.”
He explained that users will continue to receive an AI Overview as a starting point, with the added ability to ask follow-up questions conversationally from the same screen.
“This brings us closer to our vision for Search: just ask whatever’s on your mind – no matter how long or complex – and find exactly what you need,” Stein stated.
