Google is nearing the point of having concluded its efforts with numerous augmented and virtual reality initiatives.

The organization communicated today via email to Poly customers that the 3D-object creation and library service will be permanently discontinued in the coming year. The service’s final day will be June 30, 2021, and the ability to upload 3D models to the platform will cease on April 30, 2021.

Poly was initially presented as a 3D design instrument specifically tailored for virtual reality applications. The platform allowed users to readily produce simplified 3D objects utilizing tools within a VR environment. The software was intended to provide a streamlined method for developing and visualizing 3D resources for use in games and interactive experiences, differing from more detailed art and sculpting VR applications such as Google’s Tilt Brush and Facebook’s (currently Adobe’s) Medium.

Google has already ceased support for the majority of its AR/VR ventures, most prominently its Daydream mobile VR system.

The early surge in interest surrounding the AR/VR sector encouraged numerous startups specializing in 3D content to invest heavily in the creation and maintenance of digital object libraries. With a decline in investor confidence and the closure of tech platforms that hosted AR/VR content, the current demand for this type of 3D content remains uncertain.

Poly users who have contributed objects to the platform will have the opportunity to download their data and models before the service is discontinued.
