Google Veo 2: Gemini Powers Next-Gen Video Generation

Google Expands Veo 2 Access to Gemini Advanced Subscribers

Google is now making its Veo 2 video generation AI model available to those who subscribe to Gemini Advanced, the company's premium artificial intelligence service.

This expansion is a direct response to increasing competition in the AI video generation landscape, particularly from platforms like OpenAI’s Sora. The market is becoming increasingly competitive, as evidenced by Runway’s recent release of its fourth-generation video generator and a substantial $300 million capital raise.

Veo 2 Capabilities and Limitations

Beginning Tuesday, Gemini Advanced users will find Veo 2 as an option within the model selection menu in Google’s Gemini applications. Users are able to produce video clips lasting up to eight seconds, rendered at a 720p resolution and a standard 16:9 aspect ratio.

These generated videos can be easily shared to platforms like TikTok and YouTube directly through Gemini’s integrated sharing functionality. Alternatively, videos can be downloaded as MP4 files, which will include a watermark utilizing Google’s SynthID technology.

Currently, there are monthly limits placed on the number of videos a user can generate. Furthermore, Google Workspace business and education accounts are not yet supported.

Integration with Whisk and Future Plans

Google is also integrating Veo 2 with Whisk, an experimental feature within Google Labs. Whisk allows users to leverage images as prompts for Gemini to create new visuals.

A new addition, Whisk Animate, enables users to transform previously generated images into eight-second videos powered by Veo 2. Google Labs serves as a platform for early-stage AI products, accessible through the $20 monthly Google One AI Premium subscription.

While the current applications of Veo 2 may appear relatively simple, Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, has indicated plans to integrate Gemini AI models with Veo. This integration aims to enhance Gemini’s comprehension of the physical world.

Industry Concerns and Potential Job Disruption

The emergence of video generators like Veo 2 is causing concern among artists and creators, who fear potential disruption to established creative industries.

A 2024 study commissioned by the Animation Guild, representing Hollywood animators and cartoonists, projects that over 100,000 U.S.-based jobs in film, television, and animation could be impacted by AI by the year 2026.

Here's a breakdown of key points:

  • Veo 2 is now available to Gemini Advanced subscribers.
  • The tool generates 8-second videos at 720p resolution.
  • Integration with Whisk expands creative possibilities.
  • Concerns remain regarding potential job displacement in the animation industry.
