Google Discontinues 'Dark Web Report' Feature

Google to Discontinue Dark Web Report Feature
Google has announced the forthcoming discontinuation of its “dark web report” functionality, effective February 16, 2026. This tool, initially released approximately eighteen months prior, was designed to assist users in monitoring their personal data on the dark web.
Initial Functionality and User Perception
The dark web report was perceived by some as a beneficial resource. It actively scanned known data breach repositories and notified users if their sensitive information – including email addresses, full names, phone numbers, and Social Security numbers – appeared in compromised databases.
Reasons for Discontinuation
However, Google has determined to cease operation of the feature. This decision stems from user feedback indicating that the reports “didn’t provide helpful next steps” when potential identity risks were identified, as detailed on the company’s support documentation.
Lack of Actionable Advice
This sentiment was widely reflected in online forums, such as Reddit. Users frequently expressed frustration with the tool’s inability to offer concrete guidance. Many found themselves simply prompted to change passwords without knowing which specific accounts or websites were at risk.
Focus on Proactive Security Measures
“We’re making this change to instead focus on tools that give you more clear, actionable steps to protect your information online,” stated Google. The company affirmed its continued commitment to tracking and defending against online threats, including those originating from the dark web, and developing enhanced protective tools.
Alternative Security Tools Offered by Google
As a replacement for the dark web report, Google is directing users towards alternative security measures. These include “Security Checkup,” which assesses the security of your Google account. A built-in Password Manager facilitates the creation of strong, unique passwords. Furthermore, “Password Checkup” alerts users to compromised saved passwords.
Notification of Shutdown
The planned shutdown was initially reported by 9to5Google, and users have been notified via email.
Important Dates for Users
Scanning for new dark web breaches will cease on January 16. The dark web report tool will be officially discontinued on February 16, at which point all associated data will be removed from Google’s servers.
User Options for Data Control
Users currently utilizing the dark web report feature can proactively delete their monitoring profiles. This can be accomplished by navigating to “Results with your info,” selecting “Edit monitoring profile,” and then choosing “Delete monitoring profile” at the bottom of the page.
