Google AI Try-On Now Works with Just a Selfie

Google Enhances AI Clothing Try-On with Selfie Technology
Google has announced an update to its AI-powered virtual try-on feature. This advancement allows users to virtually try on clothing items utilizing only a selfie photograph.
Previously, the system required a full-body image for accurate virtual try-ons. Now, leveraging Nano Banana, Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model, a complete digital representation of the user is generated from a simple selfie.
Simplified Virtual Try-On Process
Users are prompted to select their standard clothing size. The feature then produces a series of images depicting the selected garment on their digital likeness.
From these generated images, users can designate one as their preferred try-on photo for future use.
Continued Flexibility in Image Options
The option to utilize a full-body photograph remains available for those who prefer it. Alternatively, users can choose from a diverse selection of pre-existing models representing various body types.
This new capability is currently being rolled out in the United States.
Initial Launch and Feature Access
The initial launch of the try-on feature occurred in July. It enables users to virtually test apparel from Google’s Shopping Graph across Search, Google Shopping, and Google Images.
To access the feature, users simply tap on a product listing or apparel result and select the designated “try it on” icon.
Investment in Virtual Try-On Technology
This update reflects Google’s ongoing investment in the virtual AI try-on space. The company also offers a dedicated application, Doppl, specifically designed for this purpose.
Doppl assists users in visualizing how different outfits might appear on them through the use of AI.
Doppl's Shoppable Discovery Feed
Recently, Doppl was updated with a shoppable discovery feed. This feed provides personalized recommendations, allowing users to discover and virtually try on new items.
The majority of items featured within the feed are directly shoppable, linking users to the respective merchants.
AI-Powered Outfit Recommendations
The discovery feed utilizes AI-generated videos showcasing real products. Outfit suggestions are tailored to each user’s individual style preferences.
While some users may have reservations about AI-generated feeds, Google anticipates this format will resonate with audiences accustomed to platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
