Google Beam: 3D Teleconferencing Launching in 2025

Google Rebrands Project Starline as Google Beam

During Google I/O 2025, Google revealed a rebranding of Project Starline, its 3D imaging-based teleconferencing solution designed for corporate use.

The company also reaffirmed its commitment to launching the product this year.

Google Beam: Availability and Integration

Now known as Google Beam, the platform will be initially available to select “early customers” including Deloitte, Salesforce, Citadel, NEC, and Duolingo later in 2025.

This rollout is facilitated through Google’s existing partnership with HP.

Upon launch, Google Beam will seamlessly integrate with Google Meet and other widely used videoconferencing platforms, such as Zoom.

How Google Beam Works

Google Beam utilizes a sophisticated combination of both hardware and software.

Key components include a six-camera array and a custom light field display, designed to create a highly realistic conversational experience.

An advanced AI model processes video feeds from the strategically positioned cameras, converting them into a detailed 3D rendering.

Technical Capabilities

Google asserts that Beam achieves “near-perfect” millimeter-level head tracking and delivers video streaming at 60 frames per second.

Furthermore, when used with Google Meet, Beam offers an AI-powered real-time speech translation feature.

This feature preserves the original speaker’s voice, tone, and facial expressions.

CEO Sundar Pichai on the Immersive Experience

“The result [is that Beam is] a very natural and a deeply immersive conversational experience,” stated Google CEO Sundar Pichai during a press briefing.

Market Demand in a Post-Pandemic World

A key question arises regarding the demand for Google Beam, given the increasing trend of businesses returning to fully in-office work arrangements.

The platform was initially conceived to address the needs of hybrid offices and facilitate conferencing with remote employees.

While research on remote worker productivity remains inconclusive, a prevailing sentiment among senior management, particularly within the tech industry, suggests that remote work may not be a sustainable long-term solution.

Potential Use Cases

Despite this shift, some organizations may find value in Google Beam for virtual conferences between different office locations.

In 2023, Google reported that approximately 100 companies, including WeWork and T-Mobile, were actively testing prototype versions of the technology.

Global Expansion

Google announced on Tuesday that it is collaborating with channel partners, such as Diversified and AVI-SPL, and Zoom to extend the availability of Google Beam to organizations “worldwide.”
