Google Enhances Chrome Security with New AI-Powered Scam Defenses
On Thursday, Google revealed the deployment of innovative, AI-driven security measures designed to counter scams within the Chrome browser. The technology firm will integrate Gemini Nano, its on-device large language model (LLM), into desktop versions to safeguard users from online fraudulent activities.
Enhanced Protection with Gemini Nano
Furthermore, Google is introducing new AI-powered alerts for Chrome on Android devices. These are intended to increase user awareness regarding potentially spammy notifications.
Google states that Chrome’s Enhanced Protection mode, a component of Safe Browsing, already delivers a superior level of security. It provides double the protection against phishing and other online threats when compared to the browser’s Standard Protection mode.
Now, Gemini Nano will be utilized to furnish Enhanced Protection users with an extra layer of defense against evolving online scams.
Real-Time Scam Detection
This on-device methodology allows for immediate analysis of potentially risky websites. This proactive approach protects users from scams, even those previously unknown.
“The LLM capabilities of Gemini Nano are ideally suited for this application due to its capacity to analyze the diverse and intricate characteristics of websites,” Google explained in a blog post. “This enables us to adapt more rapidly to emerging scam tactics.”
The company is currently employing this AI-driven defense to shield users from fraudulent remote tech support schemes. Plans are in place to broaden this defense to Android devices and encompass a wider range of scam types in the future.
AI-Powered Notification Warnings
Google emphasizes that the danger from deceptive websites can extend beyond the site itself, potentially reaching users through notifications. Malicious actors can exploit notifications to perpetrate scams.
Therefore, Chrome will now assist users in identifying malicious, spammy, or misleading notifications on Android devices.
When Chrome’s on-device machine learning model identifies a notification as potentially fraudulent, a warning will be displayed. Users can then choose to unsubscribe from the notification or view the blocked content.
Should a user believe a warning was issued in error, they retain the option to permit all future notifications from that specific site.
Combating Scams Across Google Platforms
Alongside this announcement, Google revealed its ongoing use of AI to suppress scams within Search results. The company reports that it detects and blocks hundreds of millions of scammy results daily.
Its AI-powered scam detection systems have proven effective, identifying 20 times more scam pages than previously possible.
Targeting Specific Scam Tactics
For instance, Google has observed a surge in malicious actors posing as airline customer service representatives to defraud individuals seeking assistance. The company states it has successfully reduced these scams by over 80%, significantly lowering the risk of users encountering fraudulent phone numbers in Search results.
