Wear OS 6 Unveiled: A Design Refresh with Material 3 Expressive
At Google I/O 2025, Google detailed upcoming enhancements for Wear OS 6. The operating system is receiving a significant visual update, incorporating the Material 3 Expressive design language that was recently presented.
A developer preview of Wear OS 6, built upon Android 16, has been released for testing purposes as of Tuesday.
Enhanced App Cohesion and Theming
Google’s objective with Wear OS 6 is to foster greater consistency in app appearance. To achieve this, app tiles will now utilize the system’s default font.
Furthermore, the dynamic theming library will adapt an app’s or tile’s color palette to harmonize with the currently selected watch face on Pixel Watches.
Design Reference Platform and Developer Tools
The new design reference platform prioritizes enabling developers to create more customizable applications with fluid transitions. Comprehensive design guidelines and Figma design files are being provided to aid developers.
Additionally, The Wear Compose Material 3 and a new Wear ProtoLayout library are being launched. These tools offer developers expanded color schemes, typography options, and shapes for crafting visually dynamic apps.
Optimized Tile Layout for Circular Displays
To complement the circular form factor of Wear OS 6 watches, a three-slot tile layout is being introduced. This layout features dedicated areas for a title, primary content, and a bottom section, ensuring visual uniformity across varying screen sizes.
New and Improved Components
Newly designed components, including buttons, progress indicators, and scroll indicators, are being added to better integrate with circular watch displays.
Developers will have the ability to implement collapsing components for scrolling in diverse ways. For example, elements can be scaled down as they approach the top or bottom of the watch screen.
Watch Face Customization and Marketplaces
Wear OS 6 introduces methods for modifying the appearance of watch faces through animated state transitions, encompassing both ambient and interactive modes, as well as photo watch faces.
A new API is also available for the development of watch marketplaces.
Enhanced Security and Media Controls
A CredentialManager API is being integrated into Wear OS, initially launching on Pixel Watches running Wear OS 5.1. This API will facilitate passkey authentication directly through the watch.
Wear OS 5.1 on Pixel devices also gains enhanced media controls, allowing users to fast-forward or rewind podcasts. Compatible applications will receive a new menu offering playlist and control options, including shuffle, “like,” and repeat functionalities.
