Google Play Adds 'Verified' Badge for Trusted VPN Apps

Google Play Introduces "Verified" Badges for VPN Applications
Google Play is currently implementing a new “Verified” badge system for a selection of VPN applications. This rollout is intended to simplify the process for users seeking trustworthy services.
According to a blog post published by Google on Tuesday, applications displaying the badge demonstrate a commitment to user privacy and security.
Badge Requirements and Validation
The presence of the badge signifies that the app’s developers have complied with Google Play’s safety and security protocols.
Furthermore, these apps have successfully undergone a Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation. This essentially confirms a secondary security review of the application.
Eligibility Criteria for VPN Apps
To qualify for the Verified badge, a VPN application must meet several criteria. These include a minimum of 10,000 installs and at least 250 user reviews.
Additionally, the app needs to have been available on Google Play for a minimum of 90 days and adhere to the required API level standards for applications on the platform.
Enhanced Visibility for Verified Apps
Google states that the badge will improve app discoverability. It will be prominently displayed on the app’s detail page within the store and in relevant search results.
The company has also created dedicated sections within Google Play to specifically feature these verified VPN applications.
“The purpose of this new badge is to emphasize applications that prioritize user privacy and security, empower users to make well-informed decisions regarding their VPN selections, and foster greater trust in the apps they choose to download,” Google explained.
Ongoing Efforts to Promote App Safety
This update represents a continuation of Google’s broader efforts to identify and highlight secure applications within its marketplace.
In May of the previous year, the company introduced “Government” labels to distinguish official applications from state and federal government entities.
