Google Wallet for Kids: In-Store Payments Now Available

Google Wallet Now Available for Kids in Select Regions

Google revealed on Wednesday a new capability for younger users. Children with Android phones can now utilize the tap-to-pay feature at physical stores via Google Wallet. This rollout is initially available in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, and Poland.

Parental Supervision and Control

Parents and guardians within these specified countries are now empowered to grant their children supervised access to digital payments directly on their Android devices. This provides a controlled environment for learning financial responsibility.

Beyond payments, Google Wallet can also be used by children to access various supported passes. These include event tickets, library cards, and digital gift cards, enhancing its utility.

Security and Transparency Features

A crucial aspect of this feature is that no payment card can be added without explicit parental consent. Furthermore, parents will receive email notifications each time their child completes a transaction.

Google’s Family Link app provides parents with comprehensive oversight. Through this application, they can monitor recent purchases, remove payment cards, and disable access to passes as needed.

Limitations and Setup Process

It is important to note that the Google Wallet functionality will not extend to online purchases for child users. The focus remains on in-store transactions.

To initiate the process, both the child and their parent must access the Wallet app on the child’s Android phone. They should then select “Add to Wallet” located at the bottom left of the screen.

Next, the “Payment card” option should be chosen, followed by “New credit or debit card.” The app will then request parental verification through Google Account login.

Following successful verification, the parent can add a valid credit or debit card. Once completed, the child can begin utilizing the Wallet app for in-store purchases.

Recent Announcements and Competitive Landscape

This launch aligns with Google’s announcement last month regarding the feature’s introduction this spring. The company has not yet disclosed plans for expanding availability to additional regions.

This move positions Google to compete directly with Apple, which already offers similar functionality through its Apple Pay Family service, allowing children to make in-store purchases.
