During Google I/O 2025, Google unveiled a new capability for Google Meet: real-time speech translation. This functionality utilizes an advanced audio large language model developed by Google DeepMind.

The aim is to facilitate seamless and natural conversations between individuals speaking different languages, as stated by Google.

How the Feature Works

Speech translation within Meet converts spoken language into the listener's chosen language instantaneously. Crucially, the nuances of the speaker’s voice, including tone and expression, are maintained throughout the translation process.

This ensures a more human-like and engaging communication experience.

Potential Applications

Google highlights a diverse range of potential applications for this technology. A prime example is enabling communication between English-speaking grandchildren and their Spanish-speaking grandparents.

Low Latency for Group Conversations

Availability and Language Support

The rollout of speech translation in Google Meet will commence in beta for consumer AI subscribers starting Tuesday. Initial language support will include English and Spanish.

Additional languages, such as Italian, German, and Portuguese, are slated to be added in the coming weeks.

Expansion to Workspace

Google is also actively developing this speech translation capability for business users. Early testing with Workspace customers is scheduled to begin later this year.
