Google Meet Update: New UI, Multipinning & Autozoom

Google Meet Receives Significant Update with New Features

Google has announced a substantial update to Meet, its video conferencing platform. The update introduces several user interface improvements for desktop users and a range of new functionalities.

Enhanced User Interface and Controls

The revised UI aims to provide a more streamlined experience. Controls and features are now more readily accessible, consolidated into a bottom row for improved usability. This contrasts with the previous layout which dispersed features across multiple menus.

New Functionality: Multipinning and Self-Feed Control

A key addition is multipinning, allowing users to highlight multiple video feeds simultaneously, rather than being limited to a single one. Presenters can now minimize or completely hide their own video feed if desired. The ability to disable the self-feed across all Meet calls is planned for future release.

AI-Powered Video Enhancements

Google is integrating AI to improve video quality. New capabilities include automatic light adjustments to enhance visibility in low-light conditions and autozoom, which intelligently frames the user within the video.

Data Saver Feature

A new Data Saver feature has been implemented. This feature is designed to reduce data consumption when using Meet on slower mobile networks.

Upcoming Features: Video Background Replacement

In the coming months, Google plans to introduce video background replacement. Initially, three scenes will be available: a classroom, a party, and a forest. Further scene options are anticipated, though custom video uploads are not currently planned.

Automatic Video Adjustments

The update includes automatic video enhancements. Meet will now automatically adjust video settings to improve visibility in dark environments and optimize video quality when a bright background is present. These improvements will be available in the coming weeks.

Autozoom for Paid Subscribers

Autozoom, the AI-powered feature that automatically centers the user in the frame, will be rolled out to paid Google Workspace subscribers in the months ahead.

Despite growing fatigue with video meetings, they remain a prevalent form of communication. This update aims to make the Meet experience more immersive, inclusive, and productive.
