Google Maps Navigation for Android - Turn-by-Turn GPS

The Convenience of Android GPS Navigation

Following my return from a recent trip to Washington DC, it became strikingly clear just how reliant I’ve become on GPS navigation on my Android phone.

The system proved invaluable, not only preventing me from getting lost amidst the complex network of DC streets, but also guiding us efficiently to numerous museums and monuments throughout the Capital area.

From Procrastination to Practicality

I had considered purchasing a dedicated car GPS unit for years, yet consistently postponed the investment.

Ultimately, this delay proved beneficial, as the Android phone I received as a gift ultimately fulfilled that need.

The inclusion of Google Maps Navigation within the Android version of Google Maps provides a robust, turn-by-turn navigation experience comparable to, and in some cases exceeding, the performance of standalone GPS devices.

A Familiar Yet Enhanced Experience

This functionality builds upon earlier iterations of Google Maps with GPS, which I previously explored using a Windows Mobile phone.

Furthermore, Ellie had also highlighted comparable mobile navigation solutions in her discussion of six useful subway map tools for mobile devices.

Real-Time Guidance and Voice Assistance

However, Google Maps GPS navigation for Android distinguishes itself by seamlessly integrating GPS location data with GPS maps, presenting a dynamic, real-time turn-by-turn display.

Activating "navigation mode" initiates a zoom into a mapping style akin to that found on dedicated GPS devices.

As upcoming turns or intersections are approached, the system clearly indicates the required route and the remaining distance.

The system also offers voice-guided instructions, selectable between male and female voices, enhancing the user experience.

Google Maps and its Navigation Features

With a GPS-enabled Android device, pinpointing your location with a blinking blue dot on the map has long been a standard feature. This functionality combines GPS coordinates with data from a mobile Internet connection. Google Maps utilizes your Internet connection to render the map, including streets and points of interest, and then integrates your position using the phone’s GPS data.

Within Google Maps, the blue location marker is readily visible, determined by either GPS or cell tower triangulation if GPS is disabled, accessible by tapping the "My Location" button. However, if you intend to use your Android device for turn-by-turn directions while mounted in your vehicle, Google’s integration of Navigation into Google Maps provides a simple solution: press the "Directions" button.

Generally, users seek directions from their current location to a specific destination. Consequently, the initial field often defaults to "My Location." You can input the desired address directly, or utilize the search function, activated by pressing the search icon, to locate the destination online.

Select your preferred route – driving, public transit, or walking – and then tap "Go."

Based on the provided information, Google Maps calculates the quickest route via driving, public transport, or walking, considering your current location. Each item listed under the "Directions" heading represents a single step in the complete set of turn-by-turn instructions. The total distance and estimated travel time, factoring in typical traffic conditions, are displayed at the top.

Notably, the estimated driving times are remarkably accurate, often within a minute, provided there are no significant traffic disruptions.

The navigation window appears during travel. When undocked, the display is vertical; however, when mounted in a dashboard dock, it switches to a horizontal view. Your current position is indicated by a blue dot, transforming into an arrow when moving, showing your direction of travel. The route is highlighted in blue on the screen.

The next intersection or turn, along with the distance to it, is shown at the top of the window, while the estimated remaining travel time to your destination appears at the bottom.

Observe the small black dot next to the "9 hr" estimate; this updates based on available traffic data. A green indicator signifies smooth traffic flow, while a change in color indicates potential delays and an altered estimated arrival time. Touching this indicator switches the display to the "traffic" view.

This view proves exceptionally useful, particularly in densely populated areas where traffic information is generally available. Traffic status is represented on the map with green, amber, or red road segments. Construction zones are also indicated. A red segment suggests exploring alternative routes to avoid congestion and save time.

For additional information overlaid on the map, click the menu button and select "Layers." This allows you to add relevant details or switch to different view modes, such as Satellite or Traffic view.

If locating gas stations or restaurants is a concern, enable the "Gas Stations" and "Restaurants" layers, and their locations will be displayed on the navigational screen with corresponding symbols.

Enabling the restaurants layer reveals local dining options marked with a fork and spoon symbol. The map above shows a restaurant along the highway, or a slightly off-the-beaten-path option on the water. Google Maps Navigation provides insight into these hidden gems, often overlooked by travelers.

For those who prefer textual directions, select "More" from the menu and then "Directions List."

This mode displays the distance and time to your destination, along with all turn-by-turn directions, highlighting the upcoming turn in green. It offers a clear, graphic-free view, allowing you to focus on the route information and make turns as needed. The window updates dynamically as you drive, ensuring you always know the next direction.

I consistently rely on Google Maps navigation for all my travels. It guided me through challenging traffic conditions in cities like Washington DC and New York City during a recent ten-hour drive. Its performance rivals that of expensive GPS systems, and it’s available at no cost!
